Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Are people getting fired?

I heard that in the midst of all these layoffs people are also being fired. Is this to avoid paying both severance and unemployment?

Obviously a huge number of current and former employees of this creepy organization are angry, discouraged, and/or scared. And that is simply not OK. We can post our gripes here (which is great), but I wonder if it's time for some kind of organized employee movement to voice our grievances directly to the people at the top. That, along with notifying the media, writing letters to the editor, and/or contacting our state officials, might be the proper, necessary, and best next steps. Imagine if hundreds of employees showed up outside of Dave W's office? Also, let the earnest young 20-somethings who have taken jobs here know that they can do better. Poor things think they've died and gone to heaven because they can go to Caribou and wear grown-up clothes. Yes, I am bitter.

we had a boomer in a clinical dept. One day her office was empty, tarp all over the windows/glass panels so you couldn't see in. She was gone. Her belongings mailed to her. The cat mugs, the pictures, the inspirational sayings, all stripped, gone. That's what they think of you. One day corporate lackey, the other day, gonzo.

A few RNs abruptly got fired from ICM recently. I think they are firing for any reason to not pay severance or formally lay off. Everyone has been on edge, who would jeopardize their job by doing something that could get them fired in these times? Even the managers are acting weird, team lead implied big changes soon but IDK, I'm updating resume. Bad vibes, no trust. Good luck everyone.

Yes re: severance. CAPs come in handy to make it appear justified even if management is bullying and actively seeking a way to toss you out. Also, being fired doesn’t carry the weight it used to. Many companies use firings to avoid severance and worse as a cover for their jealousy of said workers skills and to attempt to sabotage. Yes, that happens more and more these days. Healthcare companies are the last to actually care about impact on you, ironic? Unemployment varies by state but most times even firing doesn’t prohibit you from unemployment payments. What is great about it is that the investigation, especially if you have years of service under your belt looks really dumb on the employer and when unemployment awards the worker unemployment payments it shows the state actually sides with you and agrees you were wrongly fired! So if asked the question in interview, explain “the state awarded me compensation” so they can see fault was the company. Firings come in two categories. Egregious such as stealing company property, etc and lesser category is for like “failing to complete tasks of the job requirements” which sounds dumb if you’ve done that job forever so don’t at all worry. Even huge gaps in employment don’t bother employers these days. Yay for millennials shaking up the old ways! Of thinking and working! And if and when you have bars days ruminating if that happens to you, just remember those still stuck at UHG have the worse fate than you...
