Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

There is no future at the railiroad. Start looking for another job before you get laid off.

Folks, it's not just Union Pacific. All the class ones are in the same boat and it is only going to get worse not better. If you're relatively young and retirement isn't in the immediate future, start looking .

UP insurance might be good for agreement, but it s—s if you’re non-agreement. Wouldn’t be hard to beat that “health coverage”.

@OP There is no stability anywhere, and that isn't an accident. This is how the ruling class has always controlled the working class in America. Tonight we're partying like it's 1899. Think of it as the Gilded Age, when the railroads called in hired thugs to break strikes, only now we all have iPhones.

The railroad unions were on the frontline of every meaningful thing that has ever happened for a working person in America. The unions fought, took losses, and won real concessions. If you can't/won't stand up now, then you never will.

Complaining =/= Action

Insurance wise yes outside there are companies offering decent comparable insurance, retirement wise you won’t see as much from social security if it’s still around in 20-30 years and yes a 401k can offset the difference. But as far as disability wise I have yet to see anything that compares to what we receive (yes I realize Aflac is comparable but you have to pay out of pocket for that). That being said yes this job is quickly being surpassed in other ways by jobs outside of the rails and it’s a matter of time before pay and the other benefits are no longer comparable to worth staying for. Long term they have to step it up to get people to come work for them in the future and that will be the interesting thing to see. Those that are laid off likely won’t return and those near the bottom are looking to leave

Why you think there’s better stability at UP?

already have landed in the modern job market. don't have to use your vacation days on the weekends anymore like a peasant. UP uses a few scare tactics to keep people around.

1) "best health insurance ever". false. still got good insurance and low deductible

2) "best paying job ever". false. work less and make more now. daylights and weekends off

3) "you'll regret leaving UP". false. never met anyone that left by choice that regretted it

4) "retirement is the best". UP retirement is decent, but my company matches a higher portion of 401k than UP did. also, RR wasn't good enough to justify sticking around 30 years.

5) "wait till you get out in the real world. " wish I hadn't waited so long

There was never any future working at the railroad, at least not for someone with marketable job skills in the 21st Century economy. For someone with no education and who does manual labor, the railroad is the best job you will ever have. Nobody else is going to pay you $90k/year to spend four hours a week working and the other thirty-six complaining about your managers.

Don't take my word for it. See for yourselves when you land out there in the modern job market.
