Oh yeah you forgot you laid off or fired that ech who was 120 miles away , now you call the one that is 2oo miles away , meanwhile the Government NOC is escalating the outage to the VP , who are you going to call ? finally the artificial intelligence remote robot arrives in his drone but the door open ... The cycle has been going on for at least 25 years or more, it will continue forward, the company as we see it will change some more, we move from one technology to another, we lose people as technology consolidates equipment, one piece of equipment doing the work of a whole line up or more of what used to be used, still more consolidation as a card can do one a piece of equipment did. More remote technicians doing work in that equipment since you can use the advanced technology to get into and make cross connections and trouble shoot.
The jobs will be in cubicles more then the field going forward, then replaced by AI's after that in many aspects, then smart AI's.
Technology is not crawling forward, it is leaping, from dial up and 56k to 1terrabit speeds in less then 20 years really. one pair to one fiber for 600 or more customers and still climbing s they find more ways to separate light waves and frequencies.
Really things move to fast to really get a handle on stuff before the next wave comes along now.
Equipment specialists and IT specialists, and Engineering specialists abound, those in the field are expected to be a jack of all trades with little to know training on what's in the field they are suppose to work on is the bigger issue. Why you need a good Network of people to get things working and to repair, it's just not going to be one person going forward.
Less than 5 years.
