Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

We are different.

It amazes me how Union techs believe that National techs are in the same boat. I am sorry but we are not. As a National tech I have it pretty good. Wage, STI, workload. Of course it’s not
All cupcakes and flowers but what job is? Just saying our roles are so different it’s hard to get behind the anger you guys spew.

90% of openings with the company are Level 3 positions. National Techs for technicians. A ton of upper management jumping ship. The writing is on the wall...this is not just another company coming in. Seniority won't save anyone.

I agree, Level 3 National tech have always been better. CenturyLink and the old US West guys were primadonna b–ches. I hope they walk every single CenturyLink tech over 50 out the door.

Ha. So do I. I am a Legacy Qwest guy and if this happened after the lawsuits settled they would own the company. I am not over 50 so it wouldn’t affect me except that at that point I would work for people who have watched this industry change and would know how to take care of a customer and run the company.

I was an original QWEST national network fiber optic route tech , i was on hourly pay and considered management by HR , I was not lazy , i was not over paid , I was not an a–hole , worked sometimes 24 hours or more straight every time there was a fiber cut , worked at night and came back the next morning, got paid over time . The most fun i had was when a thunderstorm would turn off all the rectifiers at a ROW site and I would have to drive 3 hours to reset them and the if Generator would not start either then the whole segment of the network would go down if you did not get there i time . Man you guys missed all the fun ! pulling fiber optic cable up 14 stories into the CO before the network was even built ! getting stuck in the mud at 4 am trying to get to where the fiber was washed out by a flash flood , it was an adventure , splicing fiber a 3 am in building 100 miles form nowhere while being harassed by the director " hurry up ! and the coyotes were howling . standing by at every train wreck to make sure they did not cut the fiber and collecting overtime . Then came CenturyLink , then Level 3 , then heres your card board box see ya Skippy !

Low level management job as a tech?

Installation and Repair Techs that have been with the company 10 or more years remember how well we used to service our customers. We deal directly with the consumer. We go in their houses in their businesses daily. The reason there is such anger and animosity towards L3 management is we have seen the customer service go from 90% to 10%. We get to hear every single customer complain about our service our fraudulent billing and empty promises!
Yes, we are DIFFERENT!

I am a national tech under a crazy director , yes its a different type of job , we did not have to deal very much with the public customer , we did a lot of installing Racks , infinera , routers, power , fiber jumpers, locates , local business installs ( Ad tran or cisco with SC fiber connection routers, AC , HVAC , GEN Building maintenance before L3i it was the best low level management job in the world , even the night work was not so Bad , spicing fiber cuts at night along the railroad tracks all night then taking a shower and go to the office CHA CHING !! got laid off just now .... heres your card baord box see ya !
