Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Tuped into IBM. Some advise please....

Hoping someone on the site can provide informed insight pls?. Having been tuped into IBM this year and agreed terms to retain an enhanced redundancy package here in the UK. Will IBM have to honour these terms indefinitely OR are there any examples where these terms negotiated during employee consultation have NOT been honoured (and statutory redundancy terms applied). Any insight welcomed.....also finding IBM a tough place to work (culture pretty toxic), I hear I am unlikely to be offered redundancy and firm tends to repurpose people rather than pay to make them redundant, any comment on likelihood welcomed!?.

As an IBM'er, I agree that your job may be here today and gone tomorrow. Like any job, it depends on what you do and how you add to the bottom line. UK law may have protections that we do not have in the US. Financially, IBM has not been doing well so cost cutting is a constant theme.

Read the terms. you should have a copy of them. I suspect it will say IBM can change the terms without notice. Or provide you written notice if they do change the terms.

Generally, If you are still relatively young you will probably will be OK for a bit. Although of late there is a lot more scrutiny with IBM layoffs and age discrimination given all of the bad press and legal issues. So I suspect going forward, IBM will return to laying off not just older workers (as they have being doing) but also new hires and younger people, so that they can claim they are no longer practicing age discrimination.

IBM is a bad place to work, no matter the country you work in, as you said it is a toxic place. I left 6 months ago on my own, and I am a lot more happier now with my new company.
