We are getting closer and closer to Christmas, would the company really stoop so low to continue layoffs that close to it? Was there really no way to better time all of this? I mean, there is never a perfect time for layoffs, but they certainly could have chosen a better timing than this.

In response to whether you can get hired back, my department at Optum got eliminated July 2017 after I spent 18 years at UHG. None of us could get interviews immediately, but 6 months later I was getting interviews again. I ended up coming back as a contractor making more $ and then they converted me back to FTE this past summer. I learned that a backup plan is necessary at any Fortune company. Being a contactor was a good experience and many of you could likely find a job that way. I will be doing that route permanently if I lose my job again (I am a PM). The 12/4 round was very sad as many people I knew were let go.
Being laid off s—s, but it doesn't mean the company is any more greedy than when you happily went to work there. I'm sure it's upsetting, but don't suddenly trash the company because they did to you what they and all companies do and have done for years. The company answers to a board and shareholders. Like all other for-profit companies, these decisions are cold and impersonal. When people leave for a "better" job, that costs the company money (in recruiting, retraining). Thousands leave every year, for a "better" job, and ai don't hear about execs chasing you down and yelling at you. Is Optum a big company with wealthy exec's? Yes, always has been and always will be. Do they care more about profit than helping people? The company: yes, but most people I know want to help people. If they didn't care about profit, you'd never have had that 10, 20 or 30 year experience. Many companies layoff a lot and some go under.
Again, I am sorry for your layoff– all of you. The good thing is the market is great, Optum pays low and you will all do well.
In my opinion I think its very very rare to get called back at UHG or Optum after a layoff. UHG HR said when there is a termination on the companies side for any reason, the manager can mark without question, the employee is ineligible for rehire and they won't tell you. However, in my experience and those I know, some of the HR people will let this out confidentially if you're coded this way and others will say they can't give out that information. People on other web-sites have said they've posted for a lot of jobs after being severed but didn't get interviews......
Typically they don't lay off late in Dec. I was a little surprised there was a 12/4 layoff. But the company has changed over the past few years. It has become greedier, soulless, and short sighted. IMO Things got worse after we cracked the Fortune 10.
Stay at your own risk. Shady billion dollar company. I wouldn’t go back if they called me. Others have been laid off then called back. No thanks. Sold my soul enough to this fake company
Laid off Dec 4, last day Jan 2,2020. Over 19 years of service.. No good time to be laid off, but have a feeling my work is going to another office. 5 ppl in my office were notified our jobs were eliminated.
Same laid off 12/4 on payroll through 1/2. Almost 20 years of service. And they aren’t done. Next lay-off in January for optum360 bu.
To the guy who was layed off for a made up reason after 17 years, what Optum division were you in. There are others that posted similar awhile back and am wondering if its the same team that does this.
I realize you want to remain somewhat confidential but its probably ok to say the division as the divisions are so large. Also are you a male or female?
So when they lay you off, you have to work a full month or two weeks? Laid off in December and last day in January. Wow.
Yup, laid off Dec 4, told last day Jan 2. No notice, upper management decided to give our jobs to HER team in another state, they don't know what we do or how we do it, nepotism at its best, but what else is new? No great time to get laid off, but I would have appreciated a few months notice, like the people who are being laid off in March, at least they can get their finances in order.
I was fired for a made up reason after 17+ years. No severance. Yes Optum is full of grinches. They will get their due in time. Just wait.
It wouldn't be politically correct of them to care about Christmas.
It would surprise me. That is the issue, they claim compassion but yet it isnt reflected in their actions
