This made me think of Ford (it’s worth the copy and paste)

Better to SRD those who can more easily find another job!? That’s just plain crazy. SRD did not walk out all of their good people but it seemed that most who were SRD’d were pretty strong performers. Strong performers who were then free to work for the competition. You don’t need an MBA to see that’s not a recipe for success.

I was told that having a salary higher than your peers in the same job family was one of the things that would put an SRD target on your back. Seems like any leader at Ford could have pointed out that would target higher performers.

My sentiments exactly. When the most respected, hard working and helpful people are walked out it was puzzling. When the laziest remaining were then promoted it was nauseating. When coworkers began to blame the SRDed for every bump in the night, and claim credit for all the SRDed accomplishments it was revolting. When senior leadership publicly then gave false praise for false accomplishments it was hopeless.

Looking back, the decline of white collar staff seems to of started with Nassar. Perhaps some well meaning ideas but poor HR execution. The beginning of let us switch jobs every few years to avoid the knife started - which led to the rise of the general knowledge crowd (job training and PIP were abandoned) - which led to rise of political games - which led to flight of technical experts and mass off shoring - which led to general knowledge leadership team paying consultants to make decisions for them - and here we sit a mere shell of what we once were. Sound bites are more valued than sound judgement.

The bizarre logic expressed by LL5 was that it was better to SRD those who could easily find another job. How does that square with making Ford a better company? Keep the deadwood because they can’t find another job? But that told me everything I needed to know.

I’ve heard so many say the same thing... why work long days, holidays and weekends if no one values your devotion and hard work. SRD gave us that as and unexpected side effect. When you see respected, high performers walked out it takes the wind out of your sails.

B4 SRD (aka Sh–ty Raw Deal) here in Dearborn I work 45-60 hr weeks, logged in on weekdends and holidays to respond to emails, and sincerely cared about my work. Now I realize what I and my coworkers really mean to FOMOCO. I now work hard while I'm there, cut it promply at 40 hrs without guilt, and go home w/o a laptop over my shoulder. It is liberating and great for your mental health and family life....the only thing that matters anyhow.

Yeah. When I was hired they had a padding of agency and if things got tight they released agency resources. Now they keep agency resources and get rid of Ford resources. And as we saw from SRD who gets released has nothing to do with performance. Before your career at Ford was within your control. If you were willing to work your behind off you could make a career there. Sadly that’s no longer true.

The saddest part of the Ford culture is they used to hire you in, train you on how to invest, and prepare you for a great retirement and healthcare. Boy have things changed. My only issue is they gave no notice on the "change of plans." Just kicked you out. I pity anyone that hires in and thinks they have a "career" with Ford. It doesn't exist anymore.

Yep. At some point there’s only one person left. What’s worse, being cut or being the only one left trying to do all the work?

LOL - thanks for posting. So true - companies cut their way to the bottom.
