It thought that there will be more opportunities to mingle, meet and maybe even help each other in some way as a result. It may take a little to get used to at first, and it might feel a little unnerving at first, but in the long-term it should do the company a lot of good.

Company is on it's last legs and you're not happy with your cubicle?
I am an easily distracted quiet/focused type of worker, so when our office went to the 'open' floor plan, after much grumbling went out and purchased noise cancelling headphones and they worked great. My work production returned to normal. To those who surf the net, yap on their phones, layout/break a lot, warning: you will be exposed and could well be on the list of first to let go. Open floor plans s—, must be some 'global' (China, India) idea where you have to many people to office, but you can adjust to it and still get the job done.
Cheaper way to house employees?? It cost $50MM to move into this office concepts. Nothing MDR does is cheap.
Maybe this is the reason the company is in such a bad place. Employees complaining about not having "privacy" at work and feeling degraded in their NEW office space. How about you get off the phone with your wife, turn off Netflix, and get back to work. What a time to be alive.
Nice and modern but its hard to enjoy thinking that the money could have been spent paying our debts or funding the projects. A new and modern HQ is nonessential and should be the last item on checklist. Another bad and expensive decision that adds little to no value.
A lot of people are going to be asking for noise cancelling headphones for Christmas, Kwanza, Hannukah, etc. Sorry if I missed anyone, no offense!
Right. "Open concept increases productivity", said no one who's ever worked in an open concept environment.
Anyone who derides privacy as some sort of selfish thing only slackers need obviously never has to think at work or write anything worth reading (and has an office with a door that's often closed). That is, you must be in marketing or HR. Or a retention-bonused C-suiter.
And if you think there are no places to hide, you've never been in this building. Huddle rooms and phone rooms and conference rooms and all those booths in all those kitchens on all those floors, plus the humongo cafe/Starbucks and its terrace and the workout facility. Parking garage is another great place to "work remotely". Productivity will be dissipated as people search for their dignity any way and anywhere they can until they find another job.
"Open Concept" is like working in the former East Germany. There is no privacy. Anyone can spy on you and report on what you do. You never know who the informer is going to be. But keep in mind, your computer is already monitored and the web surfing history is currently stored by the IT group.
"Open concept" is a very difficult situation if you have a job that requires thinking and concentration. Because there is always some social chatter going on and you can't ever hide from it. You hear every phone call, even if you don't want to hear it! Some studies are finding that this office concept is not very effective, but is being built simply because it is a cheaper way to house employees:

Just as long as they don’t start putting cameras in the parking lot. I just invested in zero dark tint and solar power so that I can take my breaks. Probably use the gym for a few hours twice a day too.
It will increase productivity. In the old office ppl would spend all day watching TV on cell phones now they have no where to hide.
Open concept is like being on survivor. All the snitches start to out each other: psst… they've been on personal calls all day. psst… they take 3 hour lunches... psst…
Who invented the open office concept? what a sick mind the human one
The open concept will probably help keep people accountable to each other. Theres practically an admin for every director with multiple staff under them. Not enough work to go around and you used to always see someone watching netflix.
Open concept yay! What a treat!
Nice facilities, but it feels degrading sitting in these open cubes with people feeling free to socialize freely wherever there’s room to stand, even right beside my cube as if there’s a wall between us. But yay, we have solar keyboards, so why complain?
