There is no hope for promotion.

Get your resume in shape and start looking and hopefully interviewing. Regardless, it's good practice. Let's say it's not inevitable, but the odds are definitely non-zero.
Seagate will exist in some form, but the question is how small it will get. If HAMR doesn't work out big-time there will be some incremental improvements and there will always be some demand for rotating storage, but it will be SSDs in the main and Seagate owns no way to move towards vertical integration. So no need for tons of engineering cost, no need for much sales and marketing. You'll need firmware programmers, some folks to handle warranty claims, but the rest?
Leave when you can secure a better position with another company. Until then, bide your time, do your job adequately, and sock away as much cash as you can.
You'd have to make that decision based on your own situation mate. If you've got 25 years in and a family to feed then maybe not. Why are you asking others? Yeah, don't hold your breath on ever getting a promotion even if you fix HAMR.
