Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

NYS question

If you reside in New York state, get transitioned to HCL, train someone else to do your job, and then are “let go” —- can you file for unemployment?

Also if you have retirement $ coming, hold off on taking any disbursements if you want to collect unemployment. You can roll it over to an IRA ok though.

You will qualify for unemployment benefits however make sure you understand how the payments work. If you receive a severance payout you will be asked to provide a copy of your severance agreement. Your unemployment benefit payment will not begin until after the length of your severance payout. If you receive 12 weeks of severance you will not receive any unemployment until the 12 weeks have elapsed.

Yes, you can file for unemployment. HCL has to follow state laws just like Xerox. You will file on line at the NYS Dept of Labor: https://applications.labor.ny.gov/IndividualReg/. Later, you will be asked to attend a meeting at RochesterWorks (Dept of Labor office), or similar in other parts of NYS. The people are very helpful and understanding, not punitive. Take advantage of seminars they offer! Don't get discouraged, it could take several months to find the right job but it will be worth it.
