Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

If you are not near retirement it does not make sense to stay with the company

I left a year ago when it became totally obvious that we were all being played with buzzwords and make believe new markets that will save HDD like IT 4.0, autonomous driving, 5g without consideration for loss of notebook, mission critical, etc.

The final straw was when the CEO called software developers at a Cupertino all hands just a bunch of typists. Clearly he is out of touch where the value is.

Now the CIO is the chief strategist for the company and is not qualified for the role. With this CEO and CIO/strategist the company is only going to be cash flowed while NAND will eat HDD's lunch while it becomes niche. Obviously the company will be much smaller in 5 years than today.

If you are not near retirement it does not make sense to stay with the company.

Why don’t we just go out and find some amazing jobs in some amazing companies?

There is a shortage of SKILLED employees all over the world. SKILLED being the keyword.

Being a CEO is easy, just be a human and treat employees with respect. instead of disrespecting their careers and value by calling them just typists. So disconnected from people in his ivory tower surrounded by people similar to him. Not easy times for HDD but treat people with dignity and respect as you walk them out the door with the constant downsizing. We know Seagate is not loyal at its employees but we can be human and not just an expense to cut.

When Mr. Mosely was in charge of LCO many years ago, he replied to an employee's concern with "shut up and type". It sounds like he still has the same mindset .

That doesn’t make sense to me. I have worked at Seagate for many years and the IT department is now the least competent I have ever seen. Not just my opinion, I hear the same from many people across different organizations in the company.

We need to make solid and reasonable arguments. Ranting unreasonable accusations will not get us anywhere. If leaders were merely replaced how would the company have saved $44M as another post suggested ? Maybe our prior IT leaders were incompetent and lazy. The company needs tough decisions, that’s how this industry is. If we don’t like it we should go work somewhere else and be happy.

Yes, layoffs are an inevitable fact of modern corporate existence. However, firing competent people for no reason and replacing them with your friends is cronyism and unethical.

Yes, for reasons most people cannot fathom, Ravi Naik was made the head of so-called product strategy. From my observation, his only talent is in slashing jobs and he has a ridiculous pride in lowering costs to absurd extremes. He seems to know little about IT or technology. One of the worst leaders I have seen in many years.

The jokes about Seagate always reacting to what WD does keep getting more real all the time.

Because Ravi touched SSDs at one point years ago he's now a product expert? What has he done except send jobs to the far-east to cut costs? I guess now we know where Seagate is headed. Mass producing commodity electronics in the far-east at the lowest possible costs.

Wow, what a tone-deaf and classless mo–n. Not that I'm shocked. I was in IT and we've had major lay-offs every year but 2 starting in 2012. Mosely and Naik proudly declared how they got IT spend under control by saving $44 million while we're sitting there in the various all-hands meetings having had to pick up the pieces from all the friends who got laid off.

I got hit in last July's IT lay-offs and started over in September. For the sake of all my friends who are still there, I hope they can make HAMR work, otherwise they'll be about half the size or worse 5 years from now. The job market is good right now. I've encouraged them to start applying so they can be ready when the (almost) inevitable happens and maybe leave on their own terms.

It's fine to wait for the next shoe to drop as long as you're prepared and have irons in the fire already, but if you aren't in core engineering or manufacturing, I'd get ready and get out now during this job market.

STX has three software devs, Firmware (amazing work), Consumer (get the f— outta here) and Systems (WTF is a system?) So I guess Dave is 2 for 3. I agree with him.

He did call software developers a bunch of typists. I was there. Explains the demise of the company and poor short term and company ending strategy.
