Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

I was “laid off” when I questioned the book drive.

This may give away who I am, but my hours were cut to one 4hr shift per week and then I was no longer on the schedule. I was told sales were bad & there had to be cut backs.
I went from15hrs a week until I questioned the holiday book drive. Then the next week’s schedule was change to only 4hrs.
Customers buy books to donate ( which makes money for BN) BN does not donate ANY books to the drive. We have a local sponsor who matches the donations to the schools in the form of a check to BN to buy more books ( which makes money for BN) for the school. BN contributes NOTHING. Customers buy books & the sponsor buys books.
Literally a WIN WIN for BN with no donation from them.

I too always thought the book drive was a clever way to boost Christmas sales numbers.

Well, it certainly blows that the OP got jammed up with the book drive; all the years I worked there, I never witnessed anything like this–indeed, there were times we had to make multiple calls to the charities to get them off their butts to come in to pick up the books, but every time, the donations were made. Of course, I've been out of the company for a while, so I can't say how it's done these days.

But the customer can fill out a card with a message to the BOY or GIRL. What happens to that holiday message to the unknown child?

Customers are thinking the book they buy gives a child a book for Christmas. The books are collected after Christmas. Always though the drive was deceptive .
