Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Anyone that has gotten a severance package....pls comment

FIRST - are they taking the normal deductions out of that FINAL severance check? (401K, HSA contribution, the additional life and AD&D we pay for, ESPP). I hope they don't take that out of the final LUMP SUM severance check.

SECOND - be prepared to get the c-ap taxed out of your last check since it's a lump sum and will push your taxes into some ridiculous % bracket due to the gross pay amount.

THIRD - has anyone challenged the fact that if you've completed an odd # years employment you're only getting paid for the even # of years prior to your completion time. So if you complete 11,13 or 15 (grade 20-26) years you're only getting severance for 10,12 or 14 years but yet the person who completes 0-3 years are getting the full 3 weeks severance. So if you've got an odd # of completed years under your belt, you are getting screwed even though the package clearly states "you are credited with a year of service for each 12-consecutive-month period".

I was laid off Nov 5. However, my severance agreement stated it could not be signed until Nov 20 as I was to receive the two weeks pay between those 2 days. I emailed my severance agreement to them on the 20th, and got a receipt. My 15 day revocation period started then. So Dec 6th is the first day they could process my severance pay. I expect it will get processed within 7 to 10 days of Dec 6. Only Federal and State taxes, along with social security are allowed to be deducted from severance pay. Since you are no longer an employee you can no longer contribute to your 401k plan.

To the person who gave the notice to their manager. You need to check on that. I faxed my severance agreement and received my check on time. Hopefully your manager didn’t forget.

This is not correct...

From the FAQ Document:

What will be deducted from my severance pay?
Federal, state and local income taxes and other deductions required by law will be withheld from all severance payments. No benefit related deductions will be taken from your severance pay. 401K would be a benefit related deduction.

They do not take out 401, etc from severance check.
For Minnesota employees there is a 15 day revocation hold on severance, starting the day they receive your signed agreement letter. They cannot process severance until after that 15 day. It is a state law, in case people decide they want to revoke the agreement to the severance.

The severance will only have taxes taken out. Nothing else is taken out for benefits. It took about a month after my last day to get my severance because of my state’s waiting period.

To the person laid off on October 5th, you should have gotten a confirmation that your release was received. The lay-off notice packet included specific instructions on how to submit that. The release cannot be signed prior to your official end date. You may need to resend it or contact your former supervisor to make sure it was sent in properly

You can change the amount they take out for your 401K - drop it down to zero if you want.
