Thread regarding Gulfstream Aerospace layoffs

For Engineers in RDCs

Senior VP for Innovation/Engineering/Flight was in hallway this afternoon. Explained:
1) management will be informed tomorrow (Wednesday) of the new engineering org structure
2) Thursday there will be an all hands (which he said he will be calling a "town hall" for some reason)
3) "Town hall" will go over the direction of engineering. He explained the objective was to revert from multiple engineering groups/programs to one general engineering unit.

What wasn't said:
1) No confirmation the RIFs are over today (i.e. could be more tomorrow to achieve this new org structure to be revealed later tomorrow)
2) What level of management would get the new org structure prior to town hall
3) He was speaking to two people, neither of which was me. I was overhearing this as I conveniently parked myself in the coffee station next to the c-apper.

I kinda doubt we'll be seeing any new directors in engineering for a while, maybe we'll hear more details in the clown hall.

Sadly, most people will have forgotten about this week in 2 or 3 months. They'll have gradually settled back into their comfort zone, again thinking there's some degree of stability until it again smacks them in the face in 2 or 3 years. Well, next go around, I say the LT had better lose at least two, because with this RIF they had their chance to "fix" things. If we're fat again, it's on them.

Will be an interesting Town Hall to watch. Let’s see how the reorganization will look. Today was bosses day. ... I mean “who is my boss today?”

Will get rid of slackers but a lot of good talent has already walked out before the layoffs.

That does sound like the low cost option. What about the air taxis?

Sorry Gofa, but I think we are seeing the end of true clean-sheet new programs under the watch of our new SVP. The consolidation of Engineering into a single"hub" is the way Engineering was organized before G650. So we appear to be returning to a time of just managing the fleet of all new design AC except for the G550 in Savannah. We'll probably do incremental improvements over the next decade or so, but as far as anything new, I'd say no. If we go bigger, we are competing with ACJ & BBJ and they have a cabin that we can never match. Smaller and we out price ourselves with almost no profit margin at the lower end of the market.

Maybe they'll put a pilot in charge of everything. I drive a car, so by definition, I know how it's designed and fixed.

Good points made by Gofa and Jack... The reorg might work, but not with a significant amount of additional engineering manpower. Also, will have a difficult time replacing the lost knowledge yesterday. I predict there will be mass hiring / rehiring in 2020, and no one held responsible for cutting too deep now.

Not sure why, but I got the invite for Mark's town hall as well. I'm not on the engineering space. But I guess it's cool to be in the know.

Let's face it, there are a lot of people there that do very little, and I dont fault the company for dealing with those positions, however the current mindset is we are just numbers, so off with their heads.....They are cutting all these heads and in a little while will start filling other positions, they dont seem to have the forward thinking to look at placing any of those affected into other upcoming jobs. It is more "shoot from the hip" and hope they dont get their foot.

Something is going to suffer. Either you can't certify new aircraft programs at the typical expected accelerated rate, or the production problems and fleet fixes are going to get neglected. There was some bloat, but we were already falling behind with the existing structure where the managers and directors had a narrower focus. Now we're going to pile onto fewer people the whole spectrum of problems to solve across the fleet while still developing new products. You're just not going to reorg your way around inadequate resources. This all masterminded by someone with no experience doing any of this.

We heard from another high up source similar things, particularly that an all hands is imminent followed by an .org change. A combined functional org makes sense as the company really feels stretched thin and parsed out at the moment. I suspect it will also make things leaner as you can achieve the same level of work with less managers.
