The posting was up less than 24 hours all apparently for just one candidate. Apparently HR cannot spell correctly. I have heard of metallurgists but not metallurgistts!?

It was mentalist not metallurgist. They were hiring a mentalist..
Seeing that it's a metallurgist it most likely is a qualified candidate that is known to the hiring manager. I 've just seen it happen here too often that you get a manager hired because someone knew them at Baker or Schlumberger and they then proceed to bring over their cronies from the other company.
Yes this happens when the manager knows someone who is qualified. Some times it may be because of friendship. Lots of companies do it and it doesn’t make it a bad thing. Sometimes there’s good reasons. At least give the person the benefit of the doubt.
Probably have a good ol' boy candidate already selected but needed to post the position publicly to meet a regulatory requirement. This is how Weatherford has ended up with so many questionably qualified employees particularly in upper management.
