Thread regarding Riverbed Technology Inc. layoffs

How are things going?

I got laid off in July as part of the last big restructure. This week, a recruiter called asking if I would interview for a position. I’m already working for a different tech company, but I thought I would at least speak to them. How are things going, and should I consider coming back?

@3acc Are you really serious about missing those two t–ds? You're lucky dumb and dumber are gone - now the garbage can called Riverbed doesn't smell so bad.

How is Versa pipeline looking?

nutanix is less profitable than rvbd, and losing $600m per year. Diluting stock to stay afloat. Study 10k before joining. Google, fb, Amzn would be better bets.

We're hiring at Nutanix.. if you're looking for a real hyper-converged solution.

One wonders how feverishly "touchy" tried to get a post-Riverbed job before he gave up and decided to hang on until the next RIF. He's got to be one nervous unit every time he gets a call from his manager. Uber looms large in his employment future.

Digital Networking is likely to cure all evils, and especially the non technical new leadership. Someone hire me please :-( I work hard.

"Touchy"? Nope, just tired of all of the negativity. The poster is happy now, they have left the company, but they continue to poke and fill the board full of negativity. We are in much better shape with our focus on Digital Networking and customers are happy to hear our new messaging and focus. So, no not "touchy", passionate and a desire to win. Its time to look forward and if you opted to leave the company, leave the board and go have a happy life.

I remember SKO 2015 one of the presenters actually highlighted Apple as a company that turned around to greatness. This place pretty much would need a Steve Jobs to bring it back to where it once was.

I’d agree with the negative assessment over 2-3 years ago. Most of my reasons had to do with job markets, VC funding and technology. Today, most of those unicorns are dead, or IPO’d and are being crucified and for the remaining unicorns, they opted to be listed (not IPO) but are receiving negative speculation nonetheless. There are some cool companies out there to join, the question is, how long will they survive since it appears the startup failure rates increased. Portions of the technology markets are also consolidating to survive and big companies are still swallowing up these smaller companies - and trust me, the smaller can refuse but they accept the buyout because they have no real path to revenue or hit their revenue targets to IPO to obtain another round of funding. And, let’s not forget, any open source startup, well, they’re not going to do much unless they’re in a very lucrative market (eg, Elastic) but others will slowly become irrelevant as the bigger players take these little companies out.

So leave or stay, it’s a roll of a dice anyway. It all depends on what YOU want - low risk job, join HP. High risk company, join some open source startup company hoping to be acquired, if you want to challenge yourself, join an AI startup and pray the hype meets reality. The people that left wanted something that riverbed could not provide and it is to each their own. In the end, every company, big or small, will have problems - we all know this. Good times are almost temporary but, sadly, many people are hedonists and do not like the challenge of working through the tough times. The people who chose to stay are not these types of folks and will try to work through the challenges, something the younger generation needs to start understanding this fact because not everything is a unicorn or a purple squirrel

Someone's a little touchy.

I think "Half Right" more or less speaks the truth: Riverbed is circling the drain and the longer one hangs in there, the more the employment market will look askance at their situational awareness. This isn't an original view; IT history is replete with failures like this and employees who hang onto the lifeboats are generally not rewarded when ownership shuts the doors.

Wishing this were not true does not make it so.

Hay "Half Right" poster, your take is 100% wrong! This company still has people that are succeeding and winning business. Riverbed pays a competitive wage, has great benefits and tremendous upside. You personal attacks, assumptions and implied "value" that you put on the remaining employees is simply inaccurate. Poor Soul, really sounds like your being a bit condescending and frankly ugly. The remaining talent, 1800 strong, are some of the most talented people in the industry. Hope your happy with your decision to leave, feel free to LEAVE this board as well...

"Riverbed had and has some great people"

Half right. Everyone who can find a job outside of Riverbed has already done so. The poor souls remaining there just aren't all that employable in 2019. Wish them well but they'd better get creative and get moving - now.

Having to find another job earlier this year was blessing in disguise in hindsight. Nice to join a company that's actually growing. Riverbed had and has some great people but the tech has fallen behind and not kept up with the changing markets, hope the new guy can course-correct.

It depends on the position and department. Riverbed is going into chop-shop mode.

Agree with the comments- be careful! I've seen this company hire people and then make them part of a layoff after a month or two of service- more than once. They have NO clue how to manage a business or match force to load.

There is no upside to going back to this company. There remains some good tech. in the company but terrible management and execution. It's so bad that the owner (TB) had to put one of their own to run the company. More heads need to roll if there is even the slightest chance of survival.

@11rEHAop : Are you not happy with where you are working right now?

I was made redundant by Riverbed back in 2017 and struggled with multiple part time jobs just to keep me and my family afloat. Managed to land a permanent full time position with a telco exactly a year later in 2018. One year has passed in this company and I have not looked back since.

The irony is, prior to the massive global layoffs a few months ago, a recruiter called me up and informed me about a specialist position in Riverbed. I turned her down as I am happy with where I am right now.

You have to move on... unless you are extremely unhappy with your present employer and you are hoping to go back to Riverbed, it may not be the same anymore. Please be extremely careful about this. Think about it carefully before you make a choice.

Sinking ship. Too risky to come back. The future is uncertain. The new interim CEO might be able to right the ship but it’s too early to tell. Mgmt from the ex-CEO are a bunch of fools. They’re still around so don’t expect any change soon.

Maybe I am to optimistic but I do think RB can be a viable business if they can get their act together and realize that you can't fix all your problems with hiring new sales people like PM thought. They have some great core products and need to listen to the customer and they might be able to turn it around.

Save yourself some heartache and stick with the new gig unless it's absolutely horrible. Riverbed has no future unfortunately. I expect a heavy duty asset selloff to be coming as TB desperately tries to salvage the $$ they put in.
