Thread regarding Gulfstream Aerospace layoffs

Is it a good time to move away from gulfstream?

Some would say wait it out, things will change for the better, but the truth is I can't see any way that things will get better. Personally I would like nothing more than to change a job. Is it a smart move to leave on my own terms and hit the job market, at this moment?

Being in aviation for a long period of time has taught me one thing. Read the writing on the wall. When 9/11 happened everyone was worried and the trade took a hit. I had no problem shifting to the private aviation industry at that time. I have shifted between Airbus, Boeing, Raytheon, Rockwell for many years always bettering my previous position within my field. Take this as an opportunity.
It never hurts to see what’s out there. And trust me business is booming! If your worth your weight in salt there is a job for you.

Pros of getting laid off: severance package, opportunity to buy COBRA and maintain health insurance for up to the time allowed. Collect unemployment.

Cons: many people competing for few jobs.

Pros of jumping ship: get ahead of the job hunting swell.

Cons: depending on how long you've been employed, you could lose up to several months work of severance.

It's always easier to find a job when you already have one

Goofstream is a sinking ship and a shell of its former glory. If you’ve had enough, it’s as good of time as any to go; go ahead and get your resume out there. Before I quit though, I would wait until the dust settles from the RIF just to make sure you don’t cheat yourself out of any potential severance. A little bit goes a long way and you don’t want to leave any money on the table.

If you have decided you want to leave, do it now before you have a lot of competition for jobs. You won't regret it.

It's always a good time to move away from gulfstream. However, if you've been here a while, you may want to review the rig policy and just look while waiting it out. If you get rif'd, that policy applies and you get extra severance. If not, then you can leave when you have something lined up. Inadvisable to leave before having something lined up, though.
