Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

i'm gonna move to Nebraska and become a corn farmer.

To all those in Nebraska write it off. Like those that saught gold in California so long ago . All the gold is in executives hands . Someone else's name . Wake up realize most promise's are empty . Only a few are real.

@2nig: Again, we're all very happy for you. Unfortunately, how much you may personally like Nebraska has no relavence to the discussion. Nebraska has nothing to attract top talent from top schools or companies, no venture capital, no major cities (Omaha is a town) no modern/dynamic companies, nothing.

Until it has at least some of those things the type of people that Blueprint is looking to attract won't move there. Kansas is a good example (especially since it's basically the same as Nebraska). They tried the Rural Opportunity Zone thing with a $15k incentive and it flopped. What's Nebraska offered to incentivize relocation? Are these people supposed to move there because the (universally reviled) CEO of UP said so? Give me a break.

So people who couldn't afford the west coast and moved to Omaha can now take a direct flight back to visit the place they couldn't afford to live. Good for them.

I made it in other states. Lived in the northwest, on the west coast, northeast, mid-atlantic, and south and did very well in all of them. And have taken many direct flights from Eppley to DC, LA, and Florida. Perhaps you haven’t been in Omaha for a while.

Its going no where because there are not enough s—erss that believe in the S#!T that they are shoveling. Ya lets sell our S#!T and move to a state in the middle of nowhere. Thats a great idea. The only good thing that Nebraska has going for it is those NEBRASKA COEDS videos. Thats about it......if you did move there thats because you couldn't make it in any other state. #TRUTH

@1pix: You said it yourself. The people you're talking about are moving to places like Omaha because they can't afford New York or the west coast. It will take more than anything UP or Blueprint Nebraska has to get those who can and who are competitive in those job markets to come to Nebraska (hint: start with some additional tax incentives). Nebraska also doesn't have the top-tier universities to source local talent, and there's almost no capital support there. Omaha isn't even served by a major airport. Eppley is just a tarmac with a souvenir stand, and there's no direct flights anywhere.

Omaha isn't a destination. It's a compromise.

We're all glad that you're glad that you live there though. You can keep it along with UP.

There are actually a lot of people who moved to Omaha from the places you mention. Mainly people getting away from expensive areas, where the pay is higher, but the expenses cancel them out. I’m one of them. You can make a good living in Omaha and have a great standard of living. Then you take the excess cash and vacation in the places you like to visit but no longer want to live in. I can actually think of maybe half of the people I work with who actually grew up in Nebraska. Sorry to burst your bubble.

If your the best or the brightest you would probably be informed enough not to work for this company. I would say the deaf and d—b would be who would pursue a career here with the current state of this company.

Unless they have some sort of an oil boom like North Dakota nobody is moving to Nebraska. And UP is doing a fine job ensuring people are leaving.
