Don't know if this is true everywhere, but in the Charlotte NC area there suddenly appeared dozens of glowing reviews for all the local B&N stores on Yelp AFTER the layoffs. Most were praising how helpful and friendly the knowledgeable employees were. Now, most seem to have vanished. Another change implemented by new regime?

“ Could it have been DMs were paying for the positive reviews?
Or store managers?”
I highly doubt they “paid” for the reviews. Probably ordered mgrs in stores , to post them. Probably on one of their conference calls.
“ we’re getting bad publicity on line.
We won’t fix the problems. Go online and lie that we’re a good company “
I’m sure the DMs & Mgrs were involved . After the layoffs our store ( and other local ones) were a MESS.
It was chaos and our customer service suffered. Read a lot of posts on here about bad management in NC , KY & TN. Such glowing , positive reviews, especially at that time, sounds like Damage control ( ie: more lies) .
