Thread regarding CVS layoffs

More hour cuts

Was told today that starting in January many stores in my district, including mine, will be matching the RX hours throughout the week and on weekends. So, at a minimum we will be losing 20 more hours a week. That's in addition to the 23 we lost this year. In just 3 years my store has went from 202 hours to 154. Now looks like it'll be 134.

It's getting real old having to essentially layoff my team because CVS can't give us any payroll.

Is that the real reason they changed signing the ad to Sunday morning.. because we will close early with rx sat night?

I beg to differ that cvs is ok with shrink, just look how they treat us employees! At this point corporate has cut so much, the only way to cut more payroll, is to reduce the hours the stores are open company-wide.

AS far as the comment about the increase in shrink, I think that CVS is ok with that. They can use shrink and reduce taxes that they pay where payroll doesn't help. I'm sure they've done studies to see how they can benefit from shrink.

It’s safe to say that it will look very “Walgreens-ish” when it comes to 24 hour stores. Only a few select stores per market will remain; and a big factor is proximity to a current Wags 24 hour location. If you are the closest to a current Wags location, you’re safe. If you are the next closest, you’re probably out.

If payroll reductions is the issue corporate is looking to achieve, then eliminating all 24 hr. stores down to just 8-10 would certainly save a bundle on payroll. And while there at it, eliminate all extended hours too, down to regular hours, and again save even more on payroll. However to be perfectly honest, they REALLY should just make universal hours ALL stores company-wide, 8am-9pm. Then they can at least say they've cut payroll as much as possible, without completely gutting the stores. And just keep RX the same current hours. And with closing the store at 9pm, at least it gives the front store a break.

Yes some 24 hour stores will go to regular hours based on sales and scripts. I don't know what the criteria is but this came from AP and a RD. Most likey 24 hours stores that the Pharmacy is not open 24. We had a store last year pharmacy closes at 12 FS 24. The sales were just above justification to close. I assume this is something they look at every year.

any idea if they plan to k–l off all 24 hour stores to a set hour format? they started that earlier this year.. any idea if they will just finish it off and do it to the rest of the 24's to start next year?

We know cvs has close to 10,000 stores (I think 9,600 to be exact). If you can say, how many total stores will be going to RX hours? I will take even just a rough idea. And are there any areas that won’t get any RX store hours at all? Or is every district going to get at least one or two stores to RX hours? What kind of numbers are we looking at? I am trying to get a sense of if our store might qualify for reduced hours and when we might find out?

The official store list hasn’t been finalized and sent out as there may have been changes to the original list. (One of those where they have a set $ reduction to get to, and we can’t eliminate a store, only swap).

It could be that not all districts will be going to RX hours, or those that do, might not be told until the last minute, so as to "not let the cat out of the bag" so to speak. Corporate is good at secrecy. So I say just keep your eyes and ears open, and be prepared for anything that might come down the pipeline, don't stick your head in the sand!

“Assume” the customer will shop earlier in the day, doesn’t work for Pharmacy. (And they have a Drive Thru) What makes them think it will work for FS.

Spill the beans... what’s coming for store managers? I’ve been hearing rumors about corporate wanting to make changes with store managers for years, but they have been just that rumors. This year seems different though.

If the operational hours are truly changing, I’m a little surprised there has been no chatter in my district, and we just had a 6 hour RLC cascade meeting and our DL mentioned nothing. Sounds too good to be true.

We are going to change pharmacy hours to go into effect 12/1..what day is that?! Right after Thanksgiving. Busiest day of the year? You’ve got this!

Massive Hours cuts, stores closing is all coming. Read between the lines from the comments at the RLC, they want mgmt changes in the store and its coming, question is how the do it and will it be a mass wipeout early next year which is looking more and more likely. Its all their from the RLC streamlined AP reporting that makes it easier for DL’s to see things instead of a DAPL?? Hmmm

I think it’s funny that in the RLC they talked about how they are projected to miss FS shrink by 55 million this year but they continue to cut hours and add ACO machines. Do they really not realize that the more they cut the more shrink will eat away at what money they are saving?

Yes things have gotten much worse! Corporate is in a major cut anywhere you can mode!

So glad I got out of there earlier this year. I still come on here from time to time to see if things have gotten better or worse and to see if I made a mistake leaving. Looks like things are getting even worse. The grass is greener folks (much greener) I took a slight pay cut, but it was well worth it. Get out while you still can. Cvs is trash.

I still don’t get why the RX closes early anyway. What’s the point of having the front store open if the rx is closed? After all it does say PHARMACY on the sides of our buildings doesn’t it? And yet somehow corporate thinks no one needs their pr-scrip-ions after 5 or 6 on weekends?? The store should NEVER be open without the pharmacy!

People are under ringing on the ACO , worried about massive shrink going forward. Closing Very Soon is what you tell your customers when they ask.

Well of course corporate is going to underestimate the numbers. They need the numbers to support their decision.

As a DL, I hate the idea of closing my FS at 5pm or 6pm on the weekends. They said the “assume” the customers will just come earlier in the day. The “assumed” sales loss at a 40k FS was only about 50 dollars a week. Completely underestimated.

For us, it does slow up a little bit on weekends after the RX closes, but unfortunately, I think we do just enough business to warrant staying open later. I could see us closing at 9pm, but my guess it'll be all or nothing. Either you close with RX, or stay open till 10. But I think we're too busy to qualify for RX hours.

The reasoning is to cut payroll of course. I’m willing to bet the stores that were chosen see a dramatic decrease in sales after the rx closes.

Anybody know what the company’s reasoning is for going to reduced hours for certain stores? Even just closing at 9pm, will take a hit on sales, so what’s the justification for going to RX hours?

I'm on the Health Hub team. Volume doesn't matter. MinuteClinics get Health Hubs. The rest of what you're saying from speculation at RLC is just nonsense to stir up drama on here and fear monger.

Cut your operating hours and watch your sales go down. Another way to lower the bonus payout.

Just to chime in on the health hub discussion: My store is confirmed to go HH in Q1 2020. 17k in the front and a whopping 950 scripts/week. Script count is likely not a factor. MinuteClinic in the store and # of Aetna patients in the surrounding zip codes probably is.

I will be shocked if our store goes to rx hours. Saturday nights are one of our busiest nights and I can’t see us closing at 6pm. I would love to close at 6pm but I can’t see corporate giving up that business especially when 2 Walgreens nearby close at 10pm. I could see us closing at 9pm though, and I would take that as a consolation prize. At my store it’s not so much the nights people hate doing, as much as it’s the 10pm thing. If we closed earlier then more people would be willing to do nights, knowing they could get home at a reasonable hour. But getting home late at night oftentimes means not getting to bed closer to midnight, and that’s too exhausting for the next day. I can see most of the people in my store are really getting burnt out. It’s not a good environment that cvs has created right now.

To the poster who said volume doesn’t matter for the health hubs. During the RLC executives specifically mentioned low volume FS with high script pharmacies. If a store has a minute clinic great. If not don’t think they wouldn’t add it.

Would be nice if they just did it for all stores period. Make it universal company-wide.

It's up to your DL which stores go to RX hours. And Health Hubs are going in stores with MinuteClinics. Volume doesn't matter.

New Jersey here, and I would LOVE if our store went to RX hours! Be nice to get to leave early on weekends like pharmacy does! Sure wish there was a way I could find out if we are going to rx hours. I know stores in my district that would definitely qualify for reduced hours, but I can’t say for our store for sure. Would love to know exactly how corporate comes to the decision of which stores qualify for rx hours and which don’t and why? Although I would imagine extended hours stores might not qualify for rx hours.

In my district, 8 of the 13 are going to RX hours. One of them does 60-70 k a week. So, however they are deciding, it is not completely based on volume.

To the poster who mentioned about stores going to RX hours on December 1st... is this ALL stores company wide, or just select stores only?

23k and 4500 scripts? Your store will be a health hub. High volume RX with practically nonexistent FS sales. It’s exactly the kind of stores they are looking at when considering the hubs. I wouldn’t worry about hour cuts. I would worry whether they will need a store manager in your store at all.
