Thread regarding Gulfstream Aerospace layoffs

Execs Respond to Inquiries

September 26, 2019 at 5:50 PM EDT - Updated September 26 at 5:50 PM
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - WTOC has gotten several calls and messages about possible layoffs coming at Gulfstream.

We asked Gulfstream and they did not outright confirm or deny the looming layoffs. Instead, they said, “As a growing company, we regularly make changes to our workforce.”

We asked if there is a rough number or percentage of people who will be cut? Their response was, "It would be premature to comment on how many employees could be affected at any of our locations.”

We asked can you confirm the area impacted involves engineers company-wide? They replied, “I cannot confirm that. What I can tell you is that there will be very minimal impact to our direct (touch) labor force.”

We also tried to find out why the layoffs were happening. We asked specifically, “is this offset an effect from Chinese tariffs?”

They said, "...we are encountering some headwinds at the macro level, including a slowdown in emerging markets and the impact of economic and geopolitical conditions around the world."

A few employees say the announcement was made two weeks ago over a conference call that layoffs are on the way company-wide. Employees say it was said the layoffs will happen in mid-to-late October, but Gulfstream would not confirm this timeline.

They also said contractors would be contacted ahead of time giving them a heads up about what was going on. Didn't seem to keep their word on that either

They said "mid to late October", but it has already started.

It seems in Long Beach they hire college educated people for management with no aviation maintenance knowledge.

Yes, people knew the layoffs were coming.... we also knew the wrong ones would probably pay the price. Managerial incompetence some departments, non-engineers slave driving engineers... people started to split months ago.
Lets look at some of the real factors for this layoff....

*Trying to reinvent some of the "wheels" *Self-made EWIS "handcuffs" *Engine Procurement Problems Implementation of entirely new Design Process & of course..... *Managers....
Some Depts have kept Great managers, while others got the "Good ole boys" and then Added more Depts... for more "Good ole boy managers"..........
Often these Engineering Managers have Never been engineers... yet, they are manage real engineers and real projects....
So, what are some behaviors of good ole boy managers?....
*purposefully turn departments against each other *present excel spreadsheet with manipulated numbers (to impress their bosses) *when poor scheduling practices don't work... demand more overtime *Blame everyone & everything possible for their own failures
I hope the one's "up top" are willing to look deeper & talk w/ the ones doing the real work... not just for those guys (&gals), but for Gulfstream as well.
