Thread regarding Gulfstream Aerospace layoffs

Over and out....

My father was a Gulfstream contractor and he was just laid off too. He’s crushed – he was hoping that he’ll be converted to an employee, he liked the company (both co-workers and management). Now, he’s crushed and will have to figure something out – I know he’ll be fine as he’s smart and hardworking, but he’s also close to retirement and many companies prefer to hire younger people.

I know that many got let go this morning – I wish them all the best.

I think they pay is very decent for most of new contractors.

It's sad to see so many people gone.

I am sorry for you father's layoff OP.

Sub-standard pay? Not any more. The pay is very competitive AND many contract houses offer benefits, both of which are sometimes BETTER than the wages and benefits received as a direct employee. And, yes, it is an "at will" contract ... but so is being a direct employee at Gulfstream, as directs can be let go at any time without reason/explanation, as well. No one is guaranteed a job/career at Gulfstream or at any other small/medium/or large company.

Think for a minute; why would a company hire a hard-working contractor into a full time position? They are getting maximum results with sub-standard pay out of the s—er. Contractors cut their own throats by working hard... this merely insured perpetual indentured servitude. If you are too dense to understand this, you get what you deserve.

So many people take positions below their quality level as “contractors” doing the same work as permanent employees trying to get a foot in the door. They accept lower paying positions hoping to prove themselves and become a direct employee. Hundreds of people had their worlds blown apart today. Please have some respect because not everyone is a career contractor. Very sad day today in all levels!

I'm still confused how temporary employees are so b#tt-hurt over this. We were temps. Some had long runs, some didn't. We were hired because we were filling a "temporary" gap. I had some good friends who got laid off with me.
