Thread regarding Gulfstream Aerospace layoffs

Transplant Catastrophy

I recently relocated to the Savannah area for my new role. I was promised a 3 year contract with an optional 4th year back in April 2019. Today I came to work at 7:00 and found my badge no longer works. Nothing new as the security system is wonky anyway. then i noticed another contractor badge failed and the security guard had to call her office to get us in. Only she was told to have us go to Post #1 instead. When we arrived, we found a huge line of other contractors trying to get into the sites. After some questioning, we were told to call our hiring agency and head home to wait for a call. I received mine around 8:30am informing me that I was unemployed. I spend several thousands of my own money to relocate here for a long term contract. I bought a home with my savings. So now I have no job to cover a mortgage or pay off the accumulated debt for my move here. To say this is screwed up is to minimize the total impact. Gulfstream has essentially bankrupted me with their lies and false promises. I can assure you there is a lawyer in my future.

A job shopper has no rights. I'm a shopper right now, and I know damn good and well that I could be let go tomorrow, because that's the game. I get paid higher than the directs because it's a trade-off. I trade security for money, because I can always find another job. I was direct at GAC, and got laid off in 2015. That was a raw deal, but it wasn't surprising. GAC is not this great company they tell you it is. You do your job, get the money, and when it's time to go, it's time to go.

There are NO “insensitive “ replies here. Only wisdom offered by people smart enough to not commit Sepuku.

You ALWAYS have a choice. If you have a functioning brain you NEVER relocate for ANY company, and you surely don’t use your own money. Sounds like a Darwin candidate to me.

Everyone here dismissing the fact that the IRS sees any equal level work longer than a year as not a temporary contract.

The drawn out "contracting" farce is an illegal cash grab.

Pretty ridiculous with the insensitive A$$holes on here. It's easy to be so rude and have no compassion when it isn't happening to you!! Grow up people. These people had NO notice and they have families to support. Children to care for. It's absolutely horrible to treat people with such disrespect. You negative Nancies, just remember "Karma", she is A real B!! Think before you speak! Sorry for you and your family. I will keep you and everyone let go in my prayers. May you find employment quickly. And just know that not everyone from the south is a hateful as some of these people have been on here. God Bless You

All contracting in the US is "employment at will", which means you can be dismissed for any reason without the employer establishing just cause. A lawyer isn't going to help. So don't make the additional catastrophic mistake of hiring a sleazy lawyer that takes your money and delivers nothing! That being said, sorry for your loss. The rental market is great with the military around here. Try renting your newly bought house out.

If the contract company promised you a long term gig, they lied. They do not have the authority to make such promises. Good luck in your future endeavors

I'm surprised you were able to secure a loan as a contractor as most underwriters look at that as temporary work and prefer full time... I couldn't secure my loan until I got on full time here. And I'm a veteran.

I’m loving al the F U very much responses. As I stated I moved here for a long term contract As for, “if you weren’t hired within a year”, I have been here since April. Barely enough time to get settled in. And the “id–t” statement. You’re right. I was a fool to trust. I Should have known that trusting a corporation to honor their word was a fools errand. Thanks for all the sympathies. I can see my homes southern hospitality is in full effect! SMH

By very definition, contract labor is never guaranteed. If you HAVE a guarantee, then talk to your contract house about getting paid your next two years. Don't think that will go far. Was this your first contract gig? Ask to get a new job anywhere ASAP, get the $$$ rolling again, don't move your c-ap yet, stage your home, set it for sale, hope for the best, and never buy another house again as a contractor.

If you weren’t hired full time within the first year you should have known it wasn’t going to last.

I’m so sorry. I’m a contractor and was also let go this morning. Keep your head up, know that an internet stranger is rooting for you and everyone else who is let go. Everything will work out.
