Thread regarding Optum layoffs

How long does it actually take to receive the severance check in hand?

When I turned in the severance agreement, I received an automated email stating severance would be paid out within 2 - 3 pay cycles. That is literally 4 - 6 weeks time. Does it really take that long?

Yes, really, unemployment. It is more than that in the state I reside in. It isn't much but if you haven't already been laid off and found out, most places aren't enthusiastic about hiring people affected by a layoff. Even if it was through no fault of your own (meeting or exceeding all expectations,) there is no way for them to easily verify that, especially if your supervisor, manager, and director were laid off at the same time.

Between no income and a little, some is better than none...or you could just choose to go work at an extremely low wage job (McDonald's comes to mind) that will hire anyone...or work at a temp job after being a permanent employee for more than half your lifetime and be jobless again in a few months...or you could just choose to be homeless. It's been 5 months since I was laid off and despite applying for many jobs over that time period, I've had only 1 interview. UHG putting people in this situation that worked there for a decade or more just for the sake of making more profit is unforgivable.

Anyway, to those who were laid off, I'd highly recommend applying for unemployment if your bank accounts are low. Otherwise, you could quickly find yourself in a foreclosure situation if you are a single homeowner or eviction if you rent. Unemployment saved my a** and I'm very thankful for it until finding another job. The severance pay will run out before you know it. Besides, all of us paid into the unemployment insurance program for many many years exactly for this kind of emergency situation, so you might as well utilize your own money that you paid into it.

Yes, at least in my experience, it took approximately 1 month (4 - 6 weeks) to receive the severance lump sum payment despite submitting the paperwork on the first day we were allowed to. As long as you were laid off through no fault of your own, you should be able to file for unemployment, which helps.
