Thread regarding Gulfstream Aerospace layoffs

Stop speculating

Guys, stop speculating.

It’s understandable we are freaking out. But adding rumors won’t help.

Here is the confirmed info:

  • it will happen between October 15-22
  • no voluntary separation.
  • it will be based on EPR, and your individual mission.
  • job charge code starting with 003 (indirect) will get most of the hit.
  • it’s dollar driven. Not %. Not all area will have the same equal impact.
  • main issue is coming from engines that prevent us to deliver airplanes.

Now, what can you do ?

  • stop speculating.
  • get your resume up to date (even if you don’t get laid off, it’s good to have up to date).
  • browse for some jobs. Just get the temperature.
  • if you were about to do a big purchase, like a car or house, WAIT for November. (You May get a better deal anyway since it would be end of year).
  • check your emergency funds.
  • focus on your daily task. Don’t do more than usual (it’s too late and you would be seen as a c*cksucker). But also don’t do less.
  • Be on time at work!!! There is a log for tardiness. You don’t need to be smart or skilled to be on time.

Good luck all and chill.

I see lazy supervisors surfing Tweeter and Facebook instead of developing better engineering tools or learning new skills. I see supervisors that hate their jobs, but love their paycheck. They know they can't get a job somewhere else, so they choose to retaliated against competent hardworking engineers that could take their position. This situation self perpetuate the company low efficiency. Low efficiency results in finantial losses and more layoffs. This situation can k–l a company. Equally serious is when a design hazard may be overlooked because of laziness. It may takes a single serious accident caused by negligence for a company to extingush. Not saying that the company is not serious about safety, but lazy supervisors and managers may have the same effect.

Where I work we all were told to update your resume. This might be a new thing for me.

There is a very good reason management were vague in the announcement. It was a method to have those "on the fence" about leaving, to quit so they would not require to lay them off.

An easy way to end speculation would be for management to provide concrete information. Better yet, this should have been announced with actual targets and metrics to begin with.

I absolutely agree, rumors don't help and only create unnecessary panic, but so does being vague when livelihoods are on the line. I have to think that someone in management is aware of rumors swirling around. The decision not to step out in front of rumors and replace them with facts is mindboggling. Without that, I see good people jumping ship who were never under threat of being let go.

Still, like you say. Resume is updated, researching the job market, and trying to go about my day. Not easy, not fun, but there you have it. Good luck everyone. Hopefully we get specifics soon to plan accordingly.

Very well said OP! I completely agree with everything except for one part. I believe that the engine issues are not the cause of the layoff but another symptom of the underlying issues. Mismanagement at all levels drives these issues. Not all management is to blame but on average managers performance has declined in recent years.

I am not in f*cking management. I am a god damn engineer who might get my a– kicked out too. I am just sick of all the rumors and speculation. It doesn't help. And I wish my management would actually say something like this. Instead they just hope for best case scenario.
