Latest Age Discrimination At Ford

If anyone has recently applied at Ford for a direct position, you may have noticed that they now REQUIRE entering your year of graduation from High School. Of the 25 companies that I have applied to, no one else asked anything about High School. My hypothesis is that this is likely the most accurate way for Ford to screen out older workers. Seriously, if you have a bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree, what possible relevance is a High School diploma? And why after all of these years without including questions on High School do they add it now?

Although it's illegal for this age discrimination practice, good luck finding a lawyer to take on Ford.

I think the high school grad date is a great mechanism for QUICKLY determining if you are 50+ which allows them to quickly discard your application without having to go through additional background checks. Most applicants only include the last 10-15 years on a resume and the job application. Remember, Ford is probably getting a minimum of 200+ applications for each posted position so doing this early in the process saves a lot of HR time. A number of comments indicate that this discrimination is appropriate to help reduce Healthcare costs–nonetheless it is an ILLEGAL activity.

You don’t typically put your birthday on an application. When you get through the interview process you have to give enough info for them to do a background check and at that point they’ll know your age. They could reject you then for being “too old” but they wouldn’t be able to use age to decide if they wanted to interview you.

Don't you have to put your birthday on a job application? They already know how old you are.

Healthcare, you are 100% correct. It is the reason there are no raises, bonuses, anything. It's comparable to high fuel prices and is the number one drag on the economy and it's getting worse everyday! Who cares if you save all that money in a 401k, it's likely you will give it all away for healthcare.

Age discrimination?............ gimmee a break. Iacocca said it best Honda builds a plant in the corn fields of Ohio and hires 20 somethings I build a plant in downtown Detroit and hire folks who will cost more for HC insurance. This back in the day when HC insurance was very affordable. He knew HC would rise and folks we are in the thick of it.

This cannot be about pensions since they stopped that in 04' - what's it about? You guessed it, HC costs.

You all are pointing the finger at the wrong group of folks. Start with the folks @ or near 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Don't hate the player hate the game.
