The situation in our market is unbelievable. The job openings for the stores are triple what they used to be. We simply can’t get people to apply to jobs. Retailers all around us pay at least $2/hour more for entry level cashiers with no experience whatsoever. The workload for the existing associates get worse every week which drives up their stress which in turn drives up the turnover rate. It’s a descending spiral and no one is doing a thing about it. Corporate Lowe’s instituted a bonus program for people referring others to apply but what good is it if no one applies?
If Lowe’s wants to reverse this trend then the solution is clear. 1. Stop the constant changes every six months and f*cking decide on a store structure and stick with it. The never ending changes are wearing everyone down. The associates desperately need a break. 2. Raise your wages. And I don’t mean just for the new cashiers. Everyone needs a decent raise this year. 2 - 3% raises every year are a scam. They don’t even keep up with inflation. Marvin certainly doesn’t get a measly 2.5% raise when his pay is evaluated so stop treating us like fools and pay us fairly. 3. Stop constantly rolling out new programs! God, how many stinking apps do we need!? The level of micromanagement in the stores is crazy. If you don’t trust the managers then maybe you should do these jobs yourselves. We can’t get people to take the manager jobs because of the reputation of the positions. People are stepping down in our store every quarter because no one wants to put up with it. Some stores have manager positions that have been unfilled for months! Why do you suppose that is!?
There’s no way they’ll take any of these suggestions of course. The corporate management is far too arrogant to take advice from pissant associates like me. The changes will keep on coming and the situation in the stores will worsen. It’s inevitable. The one change Lowe’s won’t make is in reconsidering this disastrous strategy they’ve set their mind on.
Just wait until you see the results of Associate Opinion Survey, then you’ll get a real idea of how bad the situation really is.
