Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Ford sets people up to be “poor performers”

Ford sets people up to be “poor performers”. People are moved into jobs that don’t match their skills and are given no guidance or training. If you do know how to do your job the work load can be so extreme that it’s not possible to give anything the attention needed to achieve quality results. And if you have the misfortune of being the newest team member in a year when HR insists on ranking you’ll be the sacrificial lamb. In some cases people are poor performers but many times people are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

There are some good managers at ford. Unfortunately the good and ethical managers don’t seem to climb the corporate ladder as quickly as the ruthless ones. The LL4s and above are so focused on their pet projects that they don’t know if their teams are achieving results because of their managers or in spite of them.

Happened to me too. Worked under 3 different managers, always under the same supervisor. My supr did what he could, but even he couldn’t handle the new manager. He disappeared one day, suddenly and most unexpectedly. Once that happened, I knew the writing on the wall. I enjoyed me last few months with the group and tried to help them as I could. But when layoffs came, I was not surprised to be in that number.

Yup this is true, the idea is to find a semi easy job and stay with a good manager as long as you can. Problem sometimes occurs when they have a reorg and you end up getting a j–koff manager. The other option is to get a bargaining unit job. In this instance you are held to the same standards as a non bargaining unit employee, however, come performance review time you can tell them to shove that review where the sun don't shine. If you are laid off you will get 95% of your pay for at least 6 months to a year, sometimes even longer, depending how many others are drawing from the fund. In this time you can go to school for free on the union to get retrained. Your choice. Or wait till you are called back.
