PTSD from years of UP Work

I worked on the Western Region for many years starting as an OMT and holding a few other positions. I’ve moved from UP, to a different industry, but still find myself waking up at night with fears about managing the rail yard and responding to incidents. I still get anxiety when I walk into meetings because I’m afraid the leaders are going to start screaming like they did at UP. I feel like I need to go to counseling. The years of stress at UP are still affecting me even after leaving. I thought I’d be over with the UP nonsense.

Grow some balls and man up. If you’re feelings are hurt because you got screamed at by a manager then you got bigger problems.

To everyone bashing the original poster: take a break. Especially you agreement types.

Many people working at UP (especially agreement) have never worked anywhere else. Without a basis of comparison, many people at UP assume the toxic culture at UP is normal and acceptable. It isn't. Nobody (agreement included) should tolerate it.

Just in case non-agreement thinks they're getting a free pass, I've got news for you: UP is one of the most litigated private companies in the United States, and a lot of those lawsuits are people suing UP management for what amounts to unethical (possibly illegal) management practices. Promoting unqualified people leads to serious organizational issues. That's why most large companies don't do it. In general, UP managers are bad what they do.

If anyone yells or speaks to you in a deragatoy manner, document it. Complain to HR and take it all the way up the management chain. Do it all in writing. If UP doesn't fix the problem, sue them.

File for a PTSD disability like a lot of those phony military claims that didn’t see an ounce of action.

And you’re no doctor just someone ranting.

Let the doctors diagnose PTSD or not. However, let's also use that label for those that have suffered from a traumatic event (s). It does an injustice for those who have gone through serious, emotional/physical/mental negativity; to a point where life is altered less than optimum.

For examples: abused children and spouses; fire fighters who have to find burnt bodies; policemen that get shot at and be first responders; medical personnel that deal in trauma; and in my case, combat. I have seen Vietnam vets wake up screaming from nightmares. Many of those that return from all overseas contingencies cannot live a normal life anymore. Only those that have been there, and those with a vivid imagination know what I mean.

PTSD is over-used in my opinion. All one needs to do is Google search the symptoms, tell the doc those problems, how you developed them, and you can walk out with a diagnosis. In conclusion, leave that label for those that suffered abuse, neglect, and trauma. It will give respect for those suffering.

it doesn't take a genius to troll on an anonymous website so anything posted on here could potentially be fake. Still for those of us who have dealt with people that actually have PTSD, I'd rather err on the side of caution and offer help rather than question the motives. I'd suggest you do the same.

Sounds like to me that this original poster is a non-agreement CURRENT employee, who is trolling to stick a knife in those hurt, and give it a twist. I am sure they are sitting there with a sh1t-eating grin, feeling power over those whose lives were destroyed by leaders with a God Complex.

Craft people are fired for yelling at people. I guess it is ok if you are in management.

I have no PTS from my time at UP, but I definitely wasted a lot of my valuable time and wish I could get a refund. I have no regrets leaving and only wish I’d done it sooner.

I guess people yelling didn’t bother me. I actually usually had to try to keep from laughing because they sounded so silly getting mad over nonsense and sounded like girls. I can assure you no other reputable company acts like that. That’s a guaranteed trip to the HR office.

Good luck and by all means seek counseling.

If you want to do anything about it (legally), just be aware there is a time limit on filing a claim or lawsuit. I think 3 years. Because after this, they believe you didn't care about it. Plus when suffering from stress-related anxiety/PTSD, we tend to want to be left alone. Therefore, seek the counseling like another poster commented, document, make a connection, and file a claim. Before it's too late.

@OP: I get you. You're not alone. Go to counseling, document your treatment, and take UP to court for what they've done to you.

X-OMT.

Oh boo hoo... Karma is a b–ch isn't it? How many lives did you ruin as you climbed the corporate ladder? How many craft people have similar anxiety from interactions with you? Oh, I am sure that you were never like that...

Hopefully you live with your nightmares and "anxiety" longer than the craftspeople you have f—ed over throughout the years. Have a nice day.

Sadly enough for many of its real. After years of negativity and abuse there is a residual effect.
The good news is that over time it will work itself out.

As any traumatic experience, some of the nightmares may infrequently return

You’ll be ok. You’re getting better just by recognizing it!! Good luck

You don’t need counseling, you need faith. Go to church and talk to a minister! God bless! You’ll be ok.
