So here’s the skinny from a long timer hold the snark.

Yes - once upon a time, you could invest some or all of your 401(k) in Target stock. Just before the Great Recession, I went through a ‘user lab’ to give/receive feedback on Financial Engines & my portfolio. I passed on the service as I didn’t see the need to pay. That said, the FE consultants were horrified at amount I had invested in Target. They said investing advice was, oddly enough, to invest less in your company’s stocks and more in funds, etc. I went home & made changes.

When the Great Recession hit and all stocks took it in the shorts, I knew folks who had their 401(k) balances nearly wiped out because of how much they had in Target stock (which fell with every other stock).

When the change to stock & 401(k)s was announced it was greet with closed arms. Essentially, if you didn’t have automatic balancing* for your account - you kept the stock. Once you changed the % (only lower) it was permanent. If you used auto balancing of your account, the amount of Target stock would decline (also permanent).

Is this a good thing? Long term, yes. It may seem counter-intuitive (was for me), but ultimately makes sense by having money in less volatile investments. Folks still have choices based on goals, but less disk.

But don’t executives have stock options? Yes, but this is a norm for companies the size of Target. The idea is that it will incentivize execs to make decisions to increase stock price & benefit investors/shareholders. Does it always (seem to) work? Not always, but stocks can been a c-apshoot.

If you have a 401(k) be grateful & take advantage of free money via corporate match,

Is this perfect? There is no perfect but better than being offered nothing or only the bare minimum,

It’s always so cute when someone posts a question and then answers it themself. It’s the syntax you use in all of your posts. Same/same

Makes complete sense..... it’s very logical that new team member from target would asking a question about the 401(k) on the layoff board. Seems very real to me, not a set up at all union hack.
