MAMR is for capacities to 32 and then hamr or nand take over. It is all about tech to get through this transition.
HAMR has produced zero revenue and cost way north of billion dollars and been getting worked for over 20 YEARS (yes, I know about "QUINTA"). Do you think STX mission is to fund your unending research projects? SHOW ME THE MONEY! Actually produce some value for the company like NOW PLEASE.
Wow you people. MAMR is not the future, WD and anyone with some sensibility sees that, hence WD's marketing change from MAMR to "Energy Assisted Magnetic Recording". Also any of their MAMR demo's are lacking in any actual data. It's clear to me that many of you aren't actually doing anything related to HAMR and are purely speculating.
I would say that WD would have a 40 percent cost advantage with MAMR through 24tb while HAMR will not be profitable for stx at all until this capacity while not considering all the capital to be purchased.
Why stx did not do MAMR does not make sense

HDD companies are fighting the laws of physics and this is hard and very costly and this is why NAND is taking over. Might not be next year but will as they invest in capacity. Toshiba and WD are using mamr so I am sure it works but execution can be delayed like hamr. Hamr is too expensive until 32 tb but might hit its stride in 5 years and just might be too late. WD just needs mamr to bridge the transition to all nand because they have a non HDD future. Stx is only HDD and this future is limited. Stx is not a growth company regardless of what executives tell us.
WD is k–ling Seagate, just ask their CEO and some other C level clown. Ridiculously bad post.
It will be interesting. Stx will compete at 16tb with Toshiba and they are using aluminum so cost penalty for stx and margin will be in teens. If mamr is real it will be a rough few years at stx when cost cutting plus low margins will force a challenge to dividend while maintaining 4b in debt and less than 10b in revenue.

Don't know if mamr is real or not. Physics implies a one or two shot thing, at best. Expect the actual engineering won't work, though.
You do realize that WD is carrying at least 10B in debt.
STX has been second or third at every capacity point since 8 tb. Now that WD announced I will put my money that they will execute to the first half of 2020.
A 2 month old wd layoff.com post does not help what we know is actually going on internally at stx. Even if wd is late customers will wait for that nice discount due to its lower cost over stx. Who had the dumb idea of using glass media? CEO?

MAMR works? Really? I won't worry too much about WD's FUD. They had to do something since they don't have anything to sell and won't for at least six months. Actually betting they won't be able to ship.
Not saying STX's HAMR is any less FUD. At least there is data. Seen any MAMR data? Special NDAs to work on MAMR. Got to ask yourself why that would be.
MAMR success now might be the end of STX. They still are 100% HAMR and appear to double down on the mistake. All these clowns should be fired. Arrogant and closed to new technologies that go against “religious” adherence to an unproven tech. Only hope now is an emergency catch up MAMR tech before it’s to late. Same repeat as with He drives
Yes, because MAMR works and HAMR might never work. The arrogance of ponytail and frankly the rest of the executives who made fun of MAMR and went 100% HAMR because they were so smart has put the company disastrously behind. Seagate’s smartest didn’t even fund a MAMR research project as a contingency.
At least 1 year and the cost is way more than 20 percent. We have been behind for years in high capacity and will continue with the constant RIF and closures distracting us.
