Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Has anybody been called back from a furlough?

Or is it really just another way to get rid of the employees?

If we're talking about train service, yes. They'll eventually be caught with their pants down with nasty winter weather or flooding or an unexpected spike in traffic. After cutting manpower to the bone, after denying vacation and personal days due to "manpower shortages" when there are hundreds furloughed, after trying to squeeze the most juice out of the meat still on property, they'll eventually concede they need more bodies. It's at that point they'll issue a recall to furloughed employees, the majority of whom have moved on and will tell the UP to GTFO. They'll have to hire more s—ers – an 8 month lag from hiring advertisements to bodies on trains. Rinse and repeat.

As much as it s—s to hear, it will be quite some time before people start getting called back to work.

I'm sure just like my service unit many out there has exhausted extra boards every weekend, and work that seems to just keep adding up. Right now you can't even hold an extra board with less than eight years of seniority and there are more board cuts and furloughs on the horizon. At this juncture the Company simply does not care, and will continue not to care until the cuts start cause a bleeding that they cannot stop easily. We all know PSR is a long-term failure but right now the Class 1s have the FRA and NLRB in their pocket, and until sweeping changes are made a whole lot of people are going to be out of work.

They called back the hatchet man Vena out of retirement, so I guess anything is possible if the money is right. But, I wouldn't hold your breath for a call.

Yeah out in north atte they didn't run the callback by vena so he put the hold on that. Several of us were layed off in 2016 and called back a year later

I heard there were 30 at North Platte, but they were layed off again on the first day back. One electrician said he was called but turned them down. They didn't call anyone else. Other than that, no.

It’s happened to agreement folks in recent years. Had some furloughed and some on AW board and all got called back at one point in the area. Was a couple years ago though. I’d move on and forget about the railroad unless you just can’t find another job
