I'm guessing you are a store associate? The store manager should have an emergency action plan. Each employee should be contacted in reference to store closing and the plan......such as "we are going to close today at 5 and if there is no damage we will open tomorrow at 9." There is ABSOLUTELY no excuse for leaving associates in the dark during an extreme weather event such as this. If you are looking on a LAYOFF forum for directions on disaster management you have and EXTREMELY poor management team and need to look for employment elsewhere ASAP.
