Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Are we ever going to not fear for our jobs again?

This has been going on for far too long if you ask me. I’ve gotten to a point where I’m seriously thinking of taking a lesser paying job, just to get out of this mess. Does anyone feel the same way?

FYI i was laid off in March after working for Oracle for 10 years-1day. The initial shock was bad, but I found the job market was great. And found a good job after 2.5 months. The pay is 30% more and the company cares about it's employees. I should have made a move sooner.

There is no job security anymore.
There are benefits to bringing in H1B employees: they are cheaper of course, but I think most important of all is that you get nothing more than a slave who culturally is not very likely going to ever stand up to management to point out problems or ideas.
Perfect for insecure and dictatorial managers.

I left Oracle (roughly a year ago) after a 20+ year career at the the company. You have no idea how much better it is on the outside. There are a number of really good tech companies that are hiring, paying market value, have been successfully selling cloud for a while now, and actually taking care of their employees: Google, Salesforce, Workday, Adobe, ServiceNow, Mulesoft, Splunk, Okta,...the list goes on. Take the leap of faith and just go.

Pay cut? Why?

Oracle, with few exceptions, stopped paying at the top of the market a long time ago, Further, due to their practice of not giving raises to most employees, many have experienced salary compression and are underpaid by current market standards. Getting a compensation increase, potentially even a very significant one, is a real possibility.

That being said, it likely will require preparation and effort. With the exception of a few areas, Oracle's technology is dated and there will be a need to at least gain an understanding of newer tech if not also needing to spend some hands-on time getting familiar with it. Tech competitors like Snowflake, Mongo, Google, etc. are willing to give much better compensation packages for those who can demonstrate a competent but still rather basic/foundational understanding of the technologies they are winning with.

You are totally correct. I went to work for one company a number of years ago. After 30 days they wiped out an entire product line sending everyone - including me - out the door. I don't even bother to list it on my resume, but the good news is that I got to keep my coffee mug. This was in the early '90's.

There is no such thing as "job security". Business requirements for people change over time and it makes perfect sense to shutdown departments and make people redundant when they are no longer required.

If you were running a business would you keep people employed if they were unnecessary and costing you more money than they generated? No, i dont think you would.

If you dont like working for Oracle, then the answer is simple, find a new job.

FWIW, you might get laid off from the next job as well. I know a few people who left O for another job, and were given their walking papers at the new job within a year or two.

There are no guarantees. There is no job security anymore.

Oracle is slowly being liquidated, there is no future here, just a question of when your number will be up. Go work someplace that has a future and where you will have a career. Best of luck to you OP!
