Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Why do layoffs like this?

Why do we have to learn about more people being let go every single day? Why not just have one big layoff round and be done with it?

What, is it more fun to torture us like this? Make sure we are kept on our toes?

Seriously, what could be an advantage of laying people off day after day after day instead of all at once?

Ever heard of WARN? As much as I agree about getting it all done at once, there's a potential for legal recourse. With the STB, NTSB, and congressional boards now up the UP's a55, they have to tread very lightly. The UP can't really afford to be on the negative side of an article anymore. If you haven't done any news surfing, then I would recommend it. If you haven't seen the two congressional hearings, I urge you to watch them. Those two meetings put the class 1's on the legislative radar. The layoffs will still happen, but just on a much smaller scale.

They want you to be scared of the loss of income(got you by the wallet as they used to say), if a level 5 is being fired, let go, or etc.their thinking is if all of us have a level 4.99 we will be scared to report defects, do things the safe way without shortcuts, and work us to death, and it is working.

They have no clue what they are doing so this is comparative baby steps...

It buys time for folks to find other employment. It also helps the company appraise how deep they can go. It makes sense. If you feel you may be on the bubble don’t wait for the eleventh hour to start looking!

It has made the work environment so stressful the smart people who don’t have a lot of time in are leaving

The more people let go at one time the greater the chance of it making the news or becoming an issue. Union Pacific keeps a low profile by slowly letting people go over a long period of time

Because if there was a mass layoff, WARN would be alerted. Honestly, it doesn't matter.
