Thread regarding Wellcare Health Plans Inc. layoffs

Centene / Wellcare

Creating this thread to capture comments about the acquisition of Wellcare by Centene.

Wellcare appears to be taking actions already that are related to direction from Centene with staffing changes, layoffs/RIFs, etcetera.

Anyone know what’s up with the review cycle? HR has been very, very quiet.

People need to get over the upcoming change to Work From Home. It’s the policy of the new regime. If it hasn’t affected you yet, it will.

Every few posts there’s another comment or complaint about WFH. This is a lay-off site. People have LOST their jobs. They’d GLADLY come into work everyday of the week just to have their job back.

Isn't it ironic that because of COVID-19, we may have many offices needing to work remotely for perhaps weeks–but at least some remote employees, who have long been proving a dispersed workforce works, are being targeted for layoffs?

How are some people hearing about WFH and others have heard nothing? What department is this??

Re remote work–it's also a way to drop a lot of people, as WellCare's acquired companies had a lot of remote workers (and ones that became remote as offices were closed and there were no nearby offices to go to). It's an antique policy that doesn't reflect the tools we have today and a mobile workforce. It's certainly not one that is followed by the top healthcare companies like Aetna and Anthem, and it drives up office space costs, but consider where it comes from.

Heads up - Looks like hiring for open positions in IT and a couple other depts is starting to go on hold and requisitions are being canceled. Contract hiring is ok but FTE hiring is getting a lot more scrutiny. This is what happened in October/November last year before layoffs in Ianuary.

We received official word in our department that work from home will be going away at a later date this year, as Centene does not allow working remotely. Their view point regarding remote work does not permit “true teamwork “ and “they tried this practice at Google and it failed” The only staff permitted to work remotely are those who are in the field physically meeting with members and providers. Sad to see the culture that we had being stripped away, and very obvious they only care about acquiring the additional membership. SMH

Merit increases are effective in the March 6th paycheck for Legacy WellCare employees

by

Post ID: @33sgo+10Ctn7ht

Yes there is merit increases on March 6 which includes Care Coordinator Supervisors who go to the gym for there 1 hour lunches and end up taking 3 hours (2 hours in the gym) and then warm up there food and eat at the desk for an additional hour. After there done they waddle away there time either knocking on there cubical, going on there Samsung phone or wandering around the office and talking to other employees.

What I heard is that merit increase will be on the March 6th check and in PHS there has been no reviews completed for anyone. We have a townhall tomorrow so maybe we will know more at that time.

What's the hold up with our raises?? Has any other departments with in the Well care Legacy group had their focals yet to discuss their merit increases?? We usually know the first week of February. My department was told 2 weeks ago we would have them today. I spoke to my higher up and she said she still hasn't gotten our paper work... Very discouraging. I accomplished many goals last year, I need to know what my raise is to help plan out my future as far as buying a house, staying with the company or leaving.

Just letting everyone know that I consulted with an attorney. It’s a worthwhile discussion even if you think nothing “wrong” or “illegal” took place.

I was told that, in these mass layoff situations, companies and their attorneys are very very careful to not open themselves up to litigation. They will decide to let go of a bunch of older people but then deliberately pick a couple younger ones just to avoid discriminatory allegations. They will do this across ages, genders, and races.

If they try to change for your end date, or try to wiggle out of paying your severance - for any reason- call an attorney. They put stuff into their letters and releases that benefits them but is also questionable. They rely on people just s—ing it up and not pushing the issue.

WFH could be much more efficient if people are honest about it. All the energy and stress wasted in driving could be utilized towards being more productive at work. Just like it’s way more efficient to order online rather than going to stores for shopping.

HR needs to address the WFH issue - in my corner of PHS (corporate not in a market), we’ve been told we are safe and can continue to WFH.

Employees who WFH all or most of the time aren't being offered the option to go into an office but are being told instead that their positions are being eliminated. I am attached to an office but there is (frankly) no room there. Wasn't given option.

And I will tell you that most of the WFH-ers I know work 50-60 hour weeks, early mornings, nights, weekends, because the home office is there. To manage the workload you have to. The commute of 2 hours daily in many areas translates into 2 hours more of work.

Better they should invest in technology to empower their employees instead paying unnecessary management chains salaries.

Last week the virtual HR concierge webex confirmed that WFH is going away. Only those that travel to see members or providers will ultimately be allowed to WFH. Call the concierge desk tomorrow and ask if you want to confirm. It’s entirely possible their policies are mixed up at the moment.

While people who work hard and come to office every day losing jobs ,peole are worried about wfh or remote. They should eliminate all the wfh and remote jobs and mandate every one to be in one of their location. Specially in IT people are taking too much of advantage with this while their colleagues working hard everg day. Few do multiple jobs and few do their personal things..No offence there may be very few people who genuinly do justification to the job even with wfh or remote option. If they wants to give complete remote then lets give for all or outsource whats stopping them.if person can do job from any where except company location then thats true globally. Sorry for my venting but thats realty we spent many hours in office to cover the people who dont come office..at this point people should worry about their jobs not wfh or remote or any other fancy perks.if you are worried about other things then time to look for options.

Agree with the person below. The letter most received has a sentence that says something like “until the company no longer requires your services”

Something I've noticed about this is that people are being very quiet about this layoff and not networking. People don't know about their colleagues. I suspect the selection was done to eliminate older workers, remotes, and to eliminate as many people at WellCare and Meridian as possible in favor of Centene counterparts, even if they know nothing about your area. If you have a continuance, they have the right to shorten it, so if you think you have time, you may not. I'm openly looking. You should too.

A few questions—-

Is anyone using a labor/employment attorney? If so, who is it?
Is anyone negotiating their severance? How is it going?

Does anyone believe they were targeted? We were all told it was a synergy but was it?

This is a company that thrives off buying companies and making monetary decisions. They bought the plans and membership, the rest is cost triming. HR execs are CPAs. Remote work going away, it's an easy way to trim the workforce without having to pay severance for people that choose to leave.

I think anyone (even those with a retention contract) would be wise to start looking and have a backup plan. It’s saved me a lot of stress, even if my team has been told that we are “safe”...I’ve seen enough in my day at WellCare. I agree that some leaders are much closer to making decisions than they let on. A very prominent leader in PHS was let go and we are all still trying to wrap our brains around it - yet poor leadership remains throughout PHS. Centene, I hope you really think about keeping some of these folks - look at their track record and please see through their B.S.

Au contraire - You’d be surprised how close some folks are to these decisions.

conclusions based on this site posts..no one really knows whats going to happen. I doubt the people who takes decisions and knows the stuff will be coming to this site and posting. All immeidste management keep saying all is well no impact.
If you feel your position is in danger you cant stress better start looking now else keep calmness and wait for the decisions to come either continue or take packsges.

Does the delivery team include care coordinators?

by

Post ID: @2Pfsy+10Ctn7ht

Yes, PHS will be affected. When and how is subject to decisions surrounding the current tech platforms. It might be slower. It’s a bit more complicated because CM is split between two systems and that rollout has been very slow and painful.

We can’t abandon either system in short order and now that Centene is in the mix the outcome is even more murky.

Clinical staff that work with FL Medicare and Medicaid members are probably fine. However the entire delivery team is at risk.

It is a known fact that Centene lays off employees with high salaries in a team, and those over the age of 50, to reduce the cost of health benefits. They don't care about high performances or how many years you worked there, it's all about the Money !!!

I am wondering the same if there will be layoffs in population health services. I agree they should keep the hard workers and let the ones that dont do any work go. I know that there are a couple of care coordinator supervisors who constantly take close to two hours lunches and go to the gym and then come back to the office and warm up there food and take it to the desk and eat it for another hour. For the other 5 hours they talk, walk and do nothing. This is what is called easy-money. These are the type of people that centene lays off instead of those like me that work hard and constantly meet and exceed my metrics.
