Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

So many Linkedin requests recently

I left Intel three years ago (not ISP, was just sick of the BS). Worked in the modem department. I tried to keep in touch with some people, but many just didn't seem to care.

Well, whaddayaknow.... all of a sudden, I get a HUGE flood of Linkedin requests from former colleagues. How come? Oh... let me guess... people know they are gonna get laid off soon, and they see that I got a nice job at a profitable company, and now they think they can use me as their own personal recruiter to get a foot in the door there. Right? After not bothering for three years to maintain any kind of contact, I have suddenly become incredibly interesting to them.

Seriously, if you were too DUMB to stick with a business unit that was clearly moving at the speed of sound towards a huge brick wall, then you are also too DUMB to work at my company. If it wasn't obvious to you that we would never become profitable, if it wasn't obvious to you that we had hit a dead end with our product and if it wasn't obvious to you that Intel was treating you like dirty roaches, then I think you really really really deserve unemployment. So stop flooding my Linkedin inbox.

I have been on both sides. Laid off after almost 20 years, at a different company, I came to Intel. Regardless, if somebody kept in contact with me, I would still forward their resume, if I felt they were qualified.

The purpose of contacting old workers, is not to all of a sudden become buddies. It is to get people you have worked with who can say something about you, so you are not an unknown quantity.

It seems a little petty to me to say, you did stay my friend, so I won't help you. For some people it is very difficult to stay in contact.

I worked with a very smart person, who thought they would eventually be laid off. They never worried or applied at other companies. I talked with them about it, they were looking forward to getting a package and taking time off.

So just because you left, does not mean a person was "stupid" to stay.

I agree with others about helping each other out. I have been on both sides and it seems people don't know how to deal with situation whether they stay or got laid off.

I worked at Intel for >20 years and was impacted by layoffs. I have a different philosophy about those who have been contacting me via Linked In. I can remember when I was there at Intel and had no time or energy to network and/or to remain in contact with my friends / former co-workers outside of Intel. I wanted to, but the intensity and expectations of the job there at Intel consumed me. There was barely any time for family, let alone former co-workers/friends. And there was no time to look for a job even though I wanted to. That said.....now that I am on the other side I want to pay it forward. When I receive these contacts or call outs for help, I feel it's my time to give back to others. I know it was like to walk in their shoes and I get it. Now I can pay forward......and help others....

Me too. Some direct calls by Apple. Seems to me like Apple is cherry-picking modem people.

If you know an employee who is good and there is an opening, I think one should do a favor and fwd his or her resume.
It is extremely difficult for anyone over 40-45 or 50 to find another job no matter how good he or she is and without a proper health insurance and for single parents to have no support to fall back upon, people just perish. It took me 10 interviews after 2016-ISP to get a decent job and my biggest fear is that I may let down my family. I got laid off in 2016 due to the only SL4 I got in my 18 yr career at Intel. I was not a slouching employee or manager but a hardcore technical guy. I would have preferred they had just said 'thank you, bye' rather than call me as a poor performer. anyway

I hear ya, OP. I wouldn't be their 'friend' now if they couldn't bother with you for the last 3 years. It just shows they could care less about you UNLESS you have something THEY need, and only then. F that. man.

Glad you found something better. :) I too am glad to be out of there (ERP'ed early).
