Thread regarding Riverbed Technology Inc. layoffs

Advice

For those impacted by recent events, I feel for you. I've been in your shoes. It s*cks. Good people are being let go.

Having been there, here is a bit of advice.

  1. Mourn, but not too long. Work through the stages of grief. It is natural and expected.
  2. Get busy on LinkedIn. If you do not have a profile, build one. This is your online resume. Include a picture. Link to everyone you know. Chances are this is how you will find your next job. Encourage your now former manager and co-workers to write recommendations for you. Go to Settings and Privacy and make sure Job Application Settings are on.
  3. Update your resume. Be descriptive and include accomplishments.
  4. The good news is the IT market is still hot (at least here in the US). There are more jobs than candidates in some fields. If you do not have all of the qualifications, apply anyway. Companies are not as picky as they would be in a tight market.
  5. Don't let this define you. Like I said earlier, good people got let go. It will sting for awhile, but take stock in the qualities and skills you have. Remember those and focus on finding your next gig.
