Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Layoffs at Macy's continue

Systems and Technology was hit yesterday, with possible more cuts to follow today. Not sure if this will stay localized to MST or if more area's will be hit.

Sadly, I think we can all agree that more will be coming at some point, if not this week or this month, than the one after it. That is our reality now.

Mark my words. BUILT. All those other things require a thought leader to direct the contractors. And no, .com which is why I speak with confidence. Look around the office. See any FTE hired lately. Not me. Know why? Cause not allowed. Where’s the CTO last week? India.

I was part of the last layoff with MST. Best thi.g that ever happened to me. You will realize this as well. Collect your severance and move on. I lived with the stress of losing my job for 5 years! Now I have a wonderful world environment with a great team of people with a successful company. You will find a great job too. Leave Macy's behind. They are not going to survive.

"The site is built"??? What??? Tell that to the devs who are migrating projects to Google Cloud or common services. What about the teams developing artificial intelligence to predict buyer behavior? I can go on. An eCommerce site is never "built," when there's a constant effort to improve using the latest technologies. I hope whoever wrote that comment is in the stores and not part of Macy's Tech.

The site is built. You only need a few thinkers to come up with enhancements. You can outsource that development.

The thing that's strange to me is that business with ecommerce on the website is growing, so why so many layoffs there?

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988 (the "WARN Act") is a US labor law which protects employees, their families, and communities by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 calendar-day advance notification of plant closings and mass layoffs of employees.

The CHRO has a history of helping companies to downsize while reducing financial liability, severance, and support for impacted colleagues. Face it folks, you are in a business that will continue to decline as Macy's downsizes the field organization. There was a significant reorganization plan that was reduced in scale when Trumps corporate tax breaks saved the company millions. Business in stores continues to be tough and Q2 earnings are expected to be disappointing, expect additional layoffs with middle management and support teams facing the biggest cuts.

The teams they were moved to do make sense. The projects they were working on will be terminated.
They then have to decide to do the new work assigned or quit. Even if only a few quit, the company has eliminated more positions without having to “lay-off” people thus enabling it to reduce force without having to do the mandatory notifications that come with a planned lay-off of xx (can’t remember the exact number) people.

In addition to layoffs, tech did a big strange reorg this week where people are ending up on teams that make no sense

Remember the tech all-hands after the last round of layoffs a few months ago? One of the questions was if that was it for layoffs or were more coming. The BS response was that was it. Then they added that they'll continue to evaluate orgs for efficiency. My co-workers and I decided to update our LinkedIn then and there. With layoffs, reduction in benefits, and pulling back on the work at home policy, Macy's Tech is going to find itself in a pickle attracting software developers

I was laid off as part of field services a few months ago, who is gone this time? Also, you will land on your feet, Macy's does not deserve you, they are a sinking ship! Take the money and run!

I was laid off from Macy's Tech. This is my first layoff in a long career with a variety of companies, but I've been through the layoffs of others and think that Macy's HR was the WORST in this situation. The entire process lasted a few minutes, which was just enough time to shove the paperwork at me and wish me well. They had no idea what I actually did, and when I asked who would take over all of my outstanding work, they mumbled something about automation in the cloud. Well, good luck with that. Macy's is an American icon, so I wish them well, but...oh well, I'll just leave it at that. Good luck, everyone.
