Thread regarding McDermott International Inc. layoffs

Has anyone seen the office layout for Eldridge ?

Will there be any privacy ? Rumors are swirling around here that each task force will be assigned to one huge room to work in with a small desk for worker bees and a big desk at the front of the room to be occupied by the project manager. Never seen this done before in more than 25 years in the business. Anybody ?

Having worked in an "open concept" environment, I know first-hand that productivity does not go up when you move people to the stockyard. Collaboration and the free flow of ideas go down because people shut themselves off with their earbuds and slink down in their seats to get as close to under-the-eyeline of the top of the low walled cubes as possible. The only information that flows freely is the unsolicited, 3rd party kind from a neighbor chiming in to add to a conversation between you and someone else. If open concept truly were such a great thing, executives would be right in the middle of it all.

Open concept is the latest office trend. Rather than complaining, use it as an opportunity to collaborate and excel. Turn off YouTube and candy crush and get to work.

No more surfing the web as everyone can now see what's on your screen :(. I'll probably invest in a decent set of noise cancelling headphones for when I need to really concentrate.

“From a project manager's standpoint, nothing is more frustrating than not getting absolute best productivity.”

Are you suggesting that an open office is going to get “absolute” best productivity?

Project Manager, Hiring Manager, Site Manager. All vocally praising the new office. Yeah, b---s---. Bet 50% attrition 12 months after move.

@ZtUGclr-1sbt, sounds like you don't really know how to manage. You are what's wrong with MDR. An open environment won't fix your shortcomings.

Well the new location will have on site exercise and cafeteria. Neither is subsidised so don't get too excited.

At tech giant Gurgle, they've rolled out raises, bonuses, equity comp, free cafeteria, free workout facilities, free childcare, free massages, flexible work schedules, unlimited vacation, education subsidies, move to a beautiful new campus surrounded by nature. Each time their HR dealt with the employee pushback by saying If you don't like it, there's the door. So I get the parallel to our crabby a-- management.

Open office in a EPC environment impacts the project when workers need to concentrate on their hours long tasks. Constant distractions are major efficiency lowering factors in many EPC projects. Workers get disturbed by people coming to meet your neighbor or going for a coffee or taking a restroom break. Then overly helpful coworkers throw their two cents, to unknowingly disturb the work. However, due to the cost cutting nature of the model, employers shoot them in the foot with this failed concept.

Tech companies and investment banks pay well and work in the highest rent districts in the country. Different than just wealth transfers from workers to upper management.

Yeah, all those id--ts at them tech firms and investment banks. Damn collectivists from inferior corporate cultures with low productivity. Thank god we have people who know better!

The point is to cut cost per employee not increase productivity. Mngt can ruin this company, it's their prerogative. But don't insult my intelligence. It's just another sh-- on the employees move.

Other places have it. Bechtel does not. Indian engineering offices do. Very common in collectivist societies, comrades.

Yeah, it's actually becoming more common. Actually, it's the norm at a lot of overseas companies.

No where to hide, everyone hears you working or not. Probably easier on the managers as the obvious slackers get a lot of peer pressure and hate. Hard to "disappear" during the middle of the day to run "errands." In other words, it s***s.

it’s called breaking down silos. should be a nice change to see diff depts work together instead of against each other. 25 yrs? hot damn! nothing new or improved could have possibly happened in that time! how dare they try and change a company that almost went bankrupt multiple times from its refusal to get with the times...
