HCL Tech to hire 2,000 IBM employees as part of $1.8 bn software deal

So ~2000 heads to be kept on at HCL for ~1 year and then shown the door after that. Another stealth RA via divestiture!

The majority of these replies are hugely inaccurate.

To begin, BigFix was never Fusion!! It was created and developed by the BigFix company in the late 90s, and grew significantly in the 00's to become a leading systems management and patching solution. IBM bought it in 2008 and did very well out of it, however in the past couple of years it received less investment as IBM's focus turned to other newer and flashier security products - QRadar, Resilient, X-Force, IAM etc.

To fund IBM's acquisition of RedHat they needed cash, and HCL wanting to start a fully fledged software business and with cash to burn decided to acquire some of IBM portfolio that HCL was already developing on behalf of IBM under an IP partnership. We are talking extremely profitable products, with $billions worth of annual revenue.

However as part of the deal HCL wanted BigFix and AppScan. IBM with their hands somewhat tied in the midst of the RedHat acquisition decided to let these products go with the the domino and collaboration products they were already selling.

For BigFix it's great news - HCL are investing heavily into it's dev+support and it will be a major pillar in HCL's new software business.

I expect IBM to be launching a pretty aggressive redundancy program soon. With their focus squarely on Cloud, many existing business lines will not be part of their strategy going forward.

IT services giant HCL left employee passwords, other sensitive data exposed online

Customer project reports also published online with no authentication

HCL showing people the door after a year sounds about right.

HCL is just as toxic as Tata or IBM for that matter. Why slum it and work for either one?

Go find real jobs with longevity while its an employee's market.

I’m with HCL, 3 years since IBM sold the products/people I work with... so it seems to me you are Fake News merchant!

IEM/Fusion were the same damn thing, I had the misfortune of supporting both.

@2oei No it's not. BigFix was an external acquisition. It became IBM Endpoint Manager, and then was renamed back to bigfix. It's never been called Fusion.

@2tle - that doesn't make sense. There's no 'allow' Bigfix - they buy it and deploy it. Or are you talking about desktop support services? That's a services problem, not a product issue.

So, you have finally gotten that dream job in the mailroom...

But, soon you'll be fired from the mail room, but you'll be eligible to apply to be a subcontractor with Mail Room Supply, Inc. As a subcontractor, you'll be eligible for the standard hourly rate of $9 and you'll have the freedom to arrange for your own healthcare, own payment of all contractor taxes, and own retirement. You're also required to purchase your own Mail Room Supply, Inc. uniforms, but there's an easy payment plan for those that cannot afford them.

Conveniently, your assigned work location at Mail Room Supply, Inc. will be in the basement of Acme Corp., where you used to work. (Work location not guaranteed.)

@Z4ZW6px-1oyb ,

IBM tried pulling as fast one and it backfired.

BigFix is Fusion renamed. Fusion tool was included with the original IBM tools pack.

IBM tried double dipping-billing the customer for a renamed product. Epic fail.

Bye Bye Birdie now

I'm seeing same thing as 1nfu.. Having issues getting customers to agree to allow BigFix...

@1nfu don't know where you're getting your information, and since you say 'signings' I suspect you're in services, not product sales. Bigfix was good and growing business until the heck announcement k--led momentum in q4.

@Z4ZW6px-1gag,

BigFix was losing their shirts and could not get signings. I seen the team get trimmed several times before they finally sold the dog off. Not sure where on earth you get your info from, but I am thinking possibly Ginni or some other town hall mope.

In the US, companies aren't required to pay severance..

@xvx actually bigfix is a hugely successful and profitable part of the security unit - losing it hurts bad. Rumor is that HCL demanded it and appscan in order to take the lotus dogs.

Outsourcing playbook 101. IBM took this approach many times when negotiating outsourcing contracts. Contractually agree to keep the employees for 12 months as part of the deal, hoping many leave before the 12 month mark so the acquiring company does not have to pay severance. We normally built about 70% of the acquired employees to be severed as part of the cost case.
