Thread regarding Anadarko Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Future - APC IT Employees

I am not sure what kind infrastructure, networking and applications Chevron runs. Do you think that our IT people will be hit hard and do you think a lot of people will lose jobs. I am not sure what to expect - if someone has an inside knowledge about what to expect please share it here - if you know what Chevron does on the IT side and how things may look a few months from now, please share.

Good luck and thanks

An XOM employee here and can confirm what @1kdq stated:

You should thank god XOM didn't buy you because you would all be fired and outsourced to Mumbai.

The first visible result of a takeover is that the IT systems get merged. This could take a year or more, depending on the complexity of the systems. So APC IT staff should be ok for at least a year after the merging process starts. The process may start before regulatory & shareholder approval, since it seems that objections are unlikely.

@Yx63u56-1hjw is right, SMEs are a dime a dozen, there is no shortage of them. I'm at another major and SMEs are provided through a handful of vetted contractor companies offering managed services which have to bid to fill position/positions. As for Chevron's digital programs, I sit on Microsoft calls with one of their top IT execs and it appears CVX is definitely on the ball and a field leader in the O&G. APC IT is not safe, especially managers that have no real technical skills. Unfortunately companies end up with quite a few of those which know and are the glue to their company's IT system but are otherwise unemployable anywhere else. - Good luck to all

@mbc - I don't think SMEs in the digital space are safe either. We have so many overlapping assets that Chevron will have their SMEs either. I can't imagine Chevron's digital programs to be as useless as Anadarko's. Case in point - we fired our CIO, and they've kept theirs. I also heard through one of my contractors that several of our AAET people had been applying to other jobs long before this announcement. But they're still here. Nobody wants our people. They just want our assets. We are screwed.

Chevroid IT lead here giving my OPINION. Gen X on onion, so no f*cks given. I might do an AMA next week.

We value our embedded IT above all others (BU IT employees). Especially IT folks with a petrotechnical background. Our recent push is software engineering and "digital" so get your edX/Coursera cranking.

Our central IT does reorgs/layoffs on a regular basis...Not a fun place to be unless you are already a leader. I'll speculate that the DJ and Powder River basin related offices might be toast-- I doubt we want to operate in CO/WY.

We are a M$ and $LB shop and its hard to get experienced IT/petrotechs to go to Midland so who knows? Finally, we pay our IT the same as our petrotechs for a given pay grade so survivors might find the pay pretty competitive for IT in Texas.

In IT in the business units (embedded), we generally have a low a--hole ratio (my opinion) although competency is sometimes a problem and the work can be boring. IT is treated reasonably well at CVX. No d--gs tolerated BTW. You should thank god XOM didn't buy you because you would all be fired and outsourced to Mumbai.

All of APC's IT will be redundant and so CVR will lay them all off shortly after closing.

Chevron has announced there will be $15B-$20B in asset sales during 2020-2022. Denver is gone.

Yeah, your going to get F'd, if u don't already get a D--k slipped into you. CVX IT protects their own, and will make short work for the rest of APC employees post data migration.

My guess, short term (year 1) you probably will be okay. There is going to need to be some work to figure out how to make our systems/processes talk. After that your central IT folks will be high risk (i.e. planning and strategy organizations). The folks supporting systems/strategies that conflict with Chevron's will probably be next. The safest folks are likely the SME's in the digital space and the in the edge (embedded BU IT) business units that don't overlap with CVX business units (Midland high risk, Denver low risk).
