Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Irrelevant skill sets

This guy who has spent 13 years at Qualcomm tried to add me on LinkedIn, and I felt really sorry for him. He put stuff like C programming, WCDMA, RF on his LinkedIn. These are totally irrelevant skill sets in 2019. The only thing this guy has gained over the past 13 years is his weight and his bloated sense of ego.

Failure? Oh no sir. I am successful Director, maybe you seen my posts here. Everyone back to work! No lay-off I don’t pay you to not work when you quit for free anyway

@3bht... did anyone ask you about your “Apple Watch” work?

Anyway, your response explains the reason for its failure...

Some QC software engineers are so blind that it's not even funny. It's stupid not to keep up with modern programming methodologies and idioms. C is not irrelevant but YOU ARE if it's the only language you know. The argument of embedded C is BS. There's nothing special about programming application processor or Q6 nowadays.

It seems like most of the people here don't know the difference between C and C++ or what modern C++ provides. No wonder Qcom is in such a mess. Every single collection in Java is available in C++, and is easier to use than in Java. At the interview no one cares if you know what is dependency injection. All they care about is the algorithm.

FB heavily uses C++ for backend services. Many FANGs are developing their own chips, and they'll need plenty of C and C++ engineers. They all hack the Linux kernel. Any Qcom engineer who wants to make the switch should have a confidence to make a switch with their current skill set.

Don't be so quick to dismiss a tool.

Slide rules do not need batteries and sometimes are faster than a calculator/app.

They last forever. They teach basics.

Specialized cardboard slide rules can still be of use in some labs for quick use.

If you think Slide rule is irrelevant you really have no idea what you're talking about.

Let’s all make a statement by putting slide rule on our LinkedIn as well. After all, knowing how to use a slide rule to calculate log or take a square root shows how brilliant you’re as an engineer.

With C, define the struct, create functions to add and remove items to the hash, make sure don’t make mistake passing the pointer in the function parameter, and then the whole malloc c-ap.

With Java, one line to initialize the hash, then .put(), .get(), .containskey(). Elegant concise code.

If you guys love embedded code so much, why stop at C? Next time do the interview in assembly

OP spent 2 years doing hardcore leetcode because he got fed up with the rest and vest old timers at Qualcomm, blocking his promotion. He never considered doing HW related jobs at FANG because he knew they make half as much as their SW counterparts at FANG.

Anything that can be solved in an hour is not interesting to me and more importantly under utilizes my skills.

Give it to the new grad, H1B or FANG gang.

You dont need me for that.

Pass.

Who cares about an hr interview on any language. Are FANGs really doing that? Ugh...

Wtf are they looking for?

By that rationale. Speed writers always write the best books too I guess. Lol.

And agile code release is the holey grail to every problem. Lol.

Okay. Pass.

OP does not work at a FANG. The interview questions you get asked at those interviews are academic and are never reflective of the work you do (and not tied to any programming language). This is what happens at nearly every company. He's like a virgin bragging about how much s-x he has. And yes, embedded work, especially kernel and protocol development, is more complex than the work you'll do at a FANG for the majority of people.

The FANGs are making their own hardware devices more and more. Interfacing with HW is a far more rare skill than creating a web service. OP's coworker should have a better job soon than wherever the OP is.

OP here: Yeah, I’m at one of the FANG now.

Next time if any of you interview here, instead of solving the problem, just tell the interviewer that the answer can be found on stack overflow, and you’ve worked on far more difficult embedded problems. Let me know how it goes

@1mvy lol, if you say so. You know most of people claim they are working in FANG actually works for Amazon, but everyone knows Amazon is not much better than Q. If you are such hardcore C fan, you should try it in interview with Airbnb next time. Good luck nailing it~

@1mvy Yes, every single one of them can be solved in a hour. Got it? I've been through many FANG interviews and work in a FANG now. And if you're taking an hour, they won't hire you. The phone screen is 45 minutes. Even on site you won't be give the full hour. Some of the FANGs C++.

OP here:

For every company what matters is, is what you are doing bringing in money or not. We dont care what you use : C,C++ or java. Bottom line must be full and final - our objective get more money by hook or crook. If not then we fire these very relevant skilled engineers. F*ck them off.

@1eio, you missed the point, the point is ONE HOUR. No one did it in one hour with C++. Got it?

Post ID: @1mvy+YcXUGq0

Every single interview coding question can be solved in C++. The questions test your problem solving skills, so they are not tied to any language. You can even solve them in C. If you don't know the functions for the advanced data structures in C, just make up your own functions and tell them this how you assume they work.

Post ID: @1eio+YcXUGq0

I respect people who created amazing stuff with C, but nowadays some coding questions are so hard that no one ever solved them with C++ in an one-hour session, let alone C ... It's time to pick up something new.

The sad thing is someone thinking another connecting with them in a superficial way, such as (LinkedIn), makes you somehow superior, speaks volumes. They probably accidentally clicked you based on some random algorithm that suggested you. You may be over over inflating how "special" you are.

Marvell, Infineon, TI, Xilinx, I’ll take that over FANG any day

Post ID: @1otv+YcXUGq0

I moved on to a FANG doing 'relevant' work. Relevant work is far easier that embedded development. Most of the time I can just Google something and find the answer on stackoverflow. With kernel/driver development, that's not possible, especially when you're working with new hardware. The FANGs are developing their hardware more and more, so these engineers with 'irrelevant' experience should find jobs easily.

The embedded programming world is very conservative. But any QC engineer would shine with his skillset in an another computer embedded position outside of QC.

Its just that this is not cool anymore and fresh grads in computer science, prefer going to all Software jobs where there are a lot of awesome stuff going on, than fighting and sweating with some HW registers to save 1 CPU cycle or 2 bits of data.

Linux, Python, and Java themselves are largely written in C themselves, much less embedded mobile solutions. It's just a little bit important.

Mobile engineering requires a very specialized skill set that most of the “Silicon Valley” companies don’t even understand.

Qualcomm engineers work on customer designed Dsp’s, they don’t even have stack overflow to refer for their engineering problems, so most of their work is genuine & customized... may be that where they feel pride...

Also Engineer who works on C/C++ will be able to build far more efficient software than those working on python/ Java/ C#.

Sad part here is, OP (clearly with no sense of any of these problems) judging an actual engineering candidate.

Remember that, mobile technology is the backbone for sending messages from your smartphone or respond to this post...
