Westford is closing

This is finally happening. Projects and teams moving to Bangalore. Building to be sold.

@Ybj2f2k-nupn they just keep hiring contractors and freshers. I know because 3 folks that got laid off here in Sunnyvale Q4 last year resulted in 8 new contractor hires in Bangalore Q1 this year.

How are things in Bangalore? Are they affected by constant layoffs like the rest of us or do they just keep hiring contractors and freshers?

@Ybj2f2k-eznz Herndon is still alive. Many were affected by layoffs like the rest of Juniper. Good that there are many customers in the area, so most folks either visit customer sites or work remotely. Lots of empty cubes, so not sure how long the situation would last.

How's the situation in Herndon these days?

I'm in sales working out of the NJ office. This office is not closing, just the Openlab part and all associated staff were let go.

The previous comment about 8 weeks PTO is surprising. I've worked as RE, SE, then PS and in all three teams folks took 6 weeks or less. Unlimited PTO just benefits the company because when they lay someone off, they don't need to pay a single penny for unused PTO.

Westford may not be closing but some of my colleagues in NY, NJ, TX say their smaller office are closing.

If you are able to take 4 weeks PTO per year then you will not feel unlimited PTO is a scam. In my case, I was unable to do so. My boss always came up with BS reasons to prevent me from taking PTO. I did point out that I have hardly taken PTOs in the last couple of years, but he refused to listen. His reasoning was that 4 weeks PTO per year is based on manager's discretion and he has the right to reject PTO requests. It does not matter if I end up taking less than 4 weeks PTOs in a year. Obviously, there were folks in my group who were taking more than 4 weeks PTO per year, those were folks who either did not contribute much (so did not matter if they took PTO or not) or were a-- lickers. My boss is also a big a-- licker. So, skip level meeting would not help since he made sure he licks asses up to AK's level.

I don't think unlimited vacation is a scam. I can see why some company's scheme this way, but I would make sure to get my 4 weeks (which was the norm before the switch). If a boss refused that, I'd take it to HR or do a skip level with his boss to educate him.

Aside of this, J's benefits (and especially pay, culture & growth) are nothing special any more. So many companies offer so much more nowadays. Do a cross comparison and evaluate for yourself. If you aren't keeping your eyes/ears open to what's going around you, then you're ultimately to blame, right?

If people in Westford feel great about their condition, that's great. But there's a hell of lot of smoke that some refuse to smell or see...until it is on top of them and too late.

I agree unlimited vacation is a scam. I used to work in WFD and my manager never let me take days off. I was averaging 2 weeks of vacation per year since this unlimited vacation came into play. If this scam was not present, I would have had several weeks PTO balance and Juniper would need to pay me $$$ when I left.

@Ybj2f2k-9usv sorry to say this but you guy are part of the problem! Don't stay at company just for the benefits. Juniper benefits are not better than other companies in the bay area. It's pretty average these days. Half the companies I've worked for offer free lunches and Juniper does not. Every company I worked for has flexible hours and folks work from home at least 2 or 3 days a week. I've been in the networking industry for 18 years and switch companies voluntarily every 2 to 3 years, and was laid off only once (by Juniper). I landed a job within 4 months at a better place! Unlimited vacation is a sham. I don't know anybody who dare take more than 8 weeks vacation.

Why go to the office? Many teams here in Westford are on calls with Bangalore and Sunnyvale all the time, so we go to the office 1 or 2 days a week. I can see how there's a lot of wasted cube space. Maybe Juniper can save cost by creating DIY cubes like other companies these days. There's no closing of Westford, so someone is spreading lies.

Hey Juniper allows flexible hours and lots of work from home and unlimited vacation, so it's really not as bad as some make it out to be. Most of my friends are staying on this gravy train as long as they can!

BRAS is Broadband Remote Access Server, other names are Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) and Broadband Service Router (BSR).

This function in the MX allows the ISPs to use DSL other CMTS in the last mile to offer services to subscribers and use the MX for authentication and to enforce traffic shaping (limits) per subscriber.

Many have complained that this function did not improve in quality or features over time. Other vendors integrated with various 3rd billing and management platforms that even used AI and ML. AFAIK, we didn't. Poor PM and Engineering execution.

Sorry that I am in marketing and thus an ignoramus, but what is BRAS?

Many of my colleagues in Westford work from home 2 to 3 days a week. The reason is that most of them have frequent calls with Bangalore in the evenings. Westford is not shutting down but is shrinking as Bangalore gets bigger. This is because projects are getting shifted to Bangalore where labor is a third the cost.

Openlabs and smaller offices are shutting down. Not Westford!

BRAS was generating $450M pa when I was working in WFD. Not sure what you mean by dead business. I understand there will be layoffs etc, but getting out of a business which is generating so much money for Juniper makes no sense.

bras? Dude that’s a dead business. Highly likely the company will exit.

Rumours of WFD closing have circulated for months. Morale is in the sh--ter. But it does make sense for the company to do it. Time to move on.

I know several folks in WFD, headcount is definitely not approaching zero. It is lower than what it was a few years ago since attrition/layoffs are reducing headcount. For WFD to be shut down, mgmt has to move BRAS work to BLR. This cannot be done overnight.

What's the guesstimate of the CURRENT headcount in WFD?...

I am no math wiz, but according to this thread, it's approaching zero.

Why are you spreading lies that WFD is closing? I used to work in WFD and know folks over there. None of them mentioned anything about WFD closing. So, folks working in WFD do not know about this, but you know. Who are you exactly? Are you currently in Juniper or an ex-employee? Were you in working in WFD?
