Thread regarding Altice USA (Cablevision) layoffs

How does your shop work if you don't have a contract?

So let's say Morris goes Union tomorrow. How is the shop run? Is it "status quo" or is everything still negotiated? Le's say i want to move to a different shift, do I have to go through the union since it's there but no contract? What if I want to sign up for DFH? What if I want to make changes to my employee cable account? Does anyone know how this stuff works? No sarcasm either, I'm serious

In response to your question, our union was emailing us on company devices ( iPads, iPhones) informing us when & where meetings would be. For guys that didn’t receive these emails, a few techs would speak with them & tell them when & where they were. We encouraged everyone to try to make a meeting or two to speak with the union about any concerns/questions they would have. Our union never forced/pressured guys to come to these meetings or sign union cards. They just wanted to make sure everyone in both shops knew what was going on at all times. Thank you for your comment.

To the tech from Freeport , you guys were emailing about union meetings on company equipment before you voted ? If so you have a completely different lifestyle because here in Morris our mgmt was so in desire to find out who was wanting this union to come in so they could put a target on your back and get rid of you . So the the guys that didn’t want one for whatever reason even if it was just to kiss supv a$$ we’re never even approached. Thank you for your input though and I am very glad to hear things are going good for you guys

Good luck to all the techs in Piscataway. We’re all rooting for you. Just to answer the original post, that everything freezes once you vote for representation. You negotiate from where you are once union is in. Very important is that once you do vote for union representation you are immediately entitled to your Weingarten Rights. I know someone here already explained what they are, but it means that if you are brought in to talk/sit with mgmt in regards to any type of disciplinary action, you can at anytime enforce your Weingarten Rights & request union representation before saying or doing anything. I’m a tech in the Freeport depot & will tell you that none of us for one second regret the decision we made. We’re making great progress with our contract & feel very comfortable with IBEW 1049 representing us. I saw someone mention that not everyone knew when & where union meetings were gonna be held until vote. I know that we were getting emails on our work tablet/phone all the time with reminders of when & where meetings were gonna be. We also made sure that any techs that didn’t get these emails, were notified when & where meetings were gonna be. Once again, good luck to everyone in the Piscataway depot. We all deserve nothing, but the best for us & our families.

Thanks for insight. Sad I get better answers from people not even in my Depot. I guess I should have parked my van in some random parking lot and walked over to the IBEW like some others did. Damn, I'm such a "non union" employee.

Who the he'll said I'm voting no? Maybe if you didn't keep 1/2 the shop in the dark about meetings, more people would have gone. Once again, running your mouth without all the answers. Your circle of "yes" votes are not the only people in the shop. Your circle of yes votes are not the only yes votes.

Here's someone legit just looking for some information and you attack it. YOU are part of the problem.

Stays status quo. I’m in a union depot and this is basically how it goes. You’ll vote. Then they all disappear for four-five months. Then you’ll hear something about a contract almost done. Then you’ll ask yourself “why didn’t you have any kind of say in this”. Then you’ll reach out to them and it’ll go unanswered. Then you’ll get some bs contract slid in front of you and some bs speech about how the first contract always s---s. Then you’ll wonder what am I paying for. Then you’ll ask why did I vote yes(I did). Then you’ll go to work the same way you did before any of it started.

Good luck tho.

Oh I’m relaxed funny people that were against it now have questions 12 hours before the vote . Shouldn’t have been such a “no union “ and went to a meeting then you would’ve known this answer and trust me I’m very relaxed

Nothing changes, you just get Weingarten rights. Meaning you can have a union rep witness during all interactions with management which could lead to disciplinary actions.

Dues won’t start til you get a contract, also they can’t take anything away.

Benefits stay the same, until you agree to a contract. You could lose benefits if you agree, but you all have to vote on the contract (I don’t thank anybody would vote to lose benefits).
