Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Pointless

I was excited to start working here but all I've experienced is insecure, unskilled operations managers / employees who try to stonewall those who show an oz of ambition towards progressing in their respective careers. Yeah, some employees are nice people but that doesn't discount the fact that many of us sit around doing nothing besides staring at our phones. Management would actually rather employees pretend to work instead of doing productive things ( if that productive thing doesn't have an AIG tag on it ). "As if staring at our phones is really any better than reviewing school notes or doing things to keep our brains engaged" - insecurity at it's finest.

To the poster regarding the "outdated" older workers who aren't able to"adapt"...I was one of them. I had to show a new hire how to send an email attachment not long before I was let go. Just sayin.

The systems and process changes are motivated by AIG's desire to RIF workers in general. No age group is immune but older workers are paid more so they are disproportionately RIF'd regardless of their performance.

Re post Post ID: @Y1o20PY-1iyy I don't agree. Lots of PEOPLE have been with AIG a long time and have to embrace the ongoing changes with systems and processes. They have had to change in order to do their jobs. I would say it's far and few in between that AIG has employees that are comfortable and just doing what they are familiar with. I'm not sure what division or unit you work in, but this isn't a wide spread observation or behavior.

Those are the same people that stuck with AIG for more than 10 years. They did stick by AIG all that time during 08 and 09 with all the trouble AIG had.

They also went with out a raise for almost ten years in some cases.

What comes around goes around, and I hope you are treated with the same disrespect as you post online here.

Don’t sit around doing nothing at work or at home. Start researching your next move. Take classes. Network. Draft a business plan. Build up your LinkedIn presence. There are great ways to leverage your work hours aside from moping or binging.

My gripe isn't that some people are old. My biggest gripe is that it seems as though there's no real employee development and ,to make matters worse, those who use external resources for education and skills training seem to get put off to the side with management hoping they disappear into obscurity. Terrible for morale.

I'm not expecting a raise because of it (despite I feel the lack of raise or promotion is a whole other issue, in it'sself) or even recognition...but the insecurity of those who aren't even old enough to be insecure of new skills is extremely toxic.

In short, the values here dictate:

"do as little as you can and make it look like it was so difficult, or face the wrath of my burning insecurity because i'm too lazy to rise to the occasion and level up my skills like everybody, today, does."

It's not the age that matters, it's the PEOPLE, those who have been with AIG for the longest time, they are outdated. They do not understand what the world has to offer. And been in AIG for the longest time they are too familiar with all the processes and systems in place they are reluctant to change. They do not want to change they are comfortable with doing what they are familiar with. These are the people AIG need to get rid of and replaced.

I agree that AIG is slow to change, a huge part of that is due to the continuous cyclical pattern that AIG has of hiring new leadership (doesn't matter the age) who come in making changes w/o taking enough time to utilize experienced talent. This is true of both IT and Business. First of all they both need to work together and realize that we all have the same agenda and need to work as a team, not in Silos. There's minimal or weak support for this. Some new IT C-suite or upper management team comes in (usually they are friends or previous coworkers from another company), with all these new ideas to bring AIG 'up to date' without doing the proper consultation because after all this idea worked when I was in 'fill in the blank company', or this is the trend that we notice, or hey let's use some vendor who is either shiny and new, or who has 'done this quite well for abc company'. Of course the business side (where the money comes in), hesitates because they've been there before and have suffered the consequences (ie lost $$), IT says this time it will be different and BTW you will get this new shiny, sleek implementation in no time...it will be very cost effective. Just "give" us your requirements (just make sure it fits in this box and you stay in your business lane). I could go on and on but will stop because this is becoming a rant. It's not about age it's about perspective, this culture of proving oneself and making his/her mark on the company needs to change. The problem is that I feel it's too late to 'fix' AIG. It seems like it's just time for a do over...breaking up the company may be the best way to go.

AIG will be broken up and purchased by some other group of Executives that want to just continue bleeding the company dry so once segments of AIG get eaten up by another bigger fish there'll be more layoffs

A great argument for Age Discrimination. Rif the experienced workers in favor of younger workers who pretend to know all about new ways of doing business. That model hasn't worked out so well lately. Either posters here are idealistic or management touting the company line.

That’s precisely why they are getting rid of these people. A lot of these people have been working there like forever and least adaptable to new ways of doing business. In this digital age mindset need to be changed- people need to be agile.

I see AIG will come out stronger leaner after this exercise and probably the last hope before breaking up in smaller units.
