I learned early in my career not to talk about salary. You make those who are paid lower feel like they are not valued. It's a big blow to their moral so let's cut this one off.
Maybe...but that's not how it worked for me. Seeing my peers get paid more (especially when less qualified) drove me to job hop...effectively doubling my income every time. I plan on doing the same again now.

I learned early in my career that an easy to get along with peer who performed well above average was being paid only HALF of everyone else. HALF! He had no idea. I let him know because I thought he was worth more and he should demand significant pay increases. He did. He's still with us and outperforming the majority. If instead he would have left, I would have been disappointed, but it sends a necessary message to HR on wages.
Secret wages benefit the company more than protecting the exploited (OR the overpaid) from shame.
