About 12 years ago Ford did a voluntary separation just like the OP suggested. It was a lot better than way this was done. It even gave folks some time to find a job before they left and they could do a little knowledge transfer. If we had known the rules for separation this would have been way less agonizing for the employees.

If their goal was just to cut headcount, they wouldn't have limited the vsp to people with over 12 years experience.

They would have opened it to anybody.

They were explicitly trying to get rid of older employees.

I’ve heard of at least one instance of someone taking a VSP during this timeframe. If you would be interested in leaving under the terms of the VSP, tell your manager and HR rep.

OP: clearly these commenters are ignorant. No one knew about the severance that was to be offered & it's dumb to think that wouldn't have been a factor in a person's decision to go for a VSP. I agree that it might have helped avoid some high-performers being unfairly let go.

@Xu4WRqg-mqn sounds good in theory but I would think that anyone who did that would just get walked to the door right then and leave with nothing.

You could’ve raised your hand and told your manager you’d be willing to be laid off especially if it was to save someone else. I’m just saying.
