Thread regarding Sears layoffs

I put in my 2 weeks notice today. I'm sick of the BS here. Worked here for years and they bring in this jackass who has no common sense to run the store. Laziest dude I've ever seen, even for a sears mgr. Yet jumps on us constantly to work harder. I'm on his sh-- list now because I told him what an id--t he was for making a 70+ year old associate move appliance and the guy wound up with a hernia operation that cost the store thousands of dollars.

Store P & L, and "costing the store", is the same thing. Clearing that up for some that seem to not know the basics of what they are talking about. Now that that is clear, the store takes the hit on their P&L for all injury and / or damage related payouts. And yes, one big claim has caused Sears stores to close in recent years. That is a fact, not my opinion. As far as my opinion goes, it is a mo--nic business decision to have 70 & 80 year old people moving appliances. Furthermore, it is not in any way illegal, as a manager, to hold different associates to different standards based on their physical abilities. If you have a store manager with a brain, and even marginal people and communication skills, this is easy to manage.

There are way too many obese people in all age ranges, stop with the discriminatory attitude. There are several thin young people at my Sears. The only obese people there are a couple of middle-aged managers.

Anyone who thinks someone in their 70s should be moving appliances and unloading trucks is either a complete id--t or completely lacking in ethics. If I were the old man who got injured and had to undergo surgery, I would be contacting a lawyer. The lowlife manager should have been fired.

@enl The practice of having late 60's and 70's work in receiving moving appliances and unloading trucks is common with Sears and Kmart. They are trying to get the people to quit. I have seen it happen numerous times and was instructed to do so when I was a lead. They claim it would be discrimination if they didn't treat everyone equally regardless of age. What a crock.

Sears, like many large corporations, is 'self-insured', which means not insured at all. Everything comes out of their profits. Which worked fine decades ago when they were more profitable nationwide and could absorb sudden costs. Not so much anymore.

I have personal knowledge of this situation, as I used to work at 1171 before my position was eliminated. Pulling store associates who were advanced in age (even late 60s and 70s) off the floor and making them move appliances and unload trucks was/is a common practice under this manager. This did in fact result in an associate in his 70s getting a hernia and having to undergo an operation. During a conversation about this, the manager in question defended this practice and told me he had done it routinely at previous stores he had managed. I stopped short of calling him an id--t like the OP did, but did tell him I thought it was wrong and tried to explain to him that people in that age bracket get injured very easily as a rule, even performing common everyday tasks. He did not want to hear it. Trying to reason with this guy is an exercise in futility, like most other things at 1171.

Yes, I've heard that worker's comp claims, and also any 'member' personal injury lawsuits, get counted against the profit/loss of the individual store where the incident occurred. One bad injury could shut down a store.
