Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Age discrimination is out of control

Why is majority of those laid off in their late forties or early fifties? It looks like #agediscrimination is out of control here and nobody is really either talking about it or trying to do anything about it.

I guess nobody but those directly affected cares about this issue...

accusations of age discrimination are indicative of a poorly performing economy. When labor is valuable and hiring is a priority you hear less about this. It can't be proved but the number of complaints about it are far less during a booming economy.

IBM in trouble for the same thing.

"The lawsuit, Rusis et al v. IBM, was filed in September 2018. Along with similar age discrimination claims brought against IBM in California and Texas, it followed a March 2018 report from ProPublica and Mother Jones that said the global IT biz over the past few years engaged in a systematic campaign to get rid of older workers"

These big companies all use the same consultants and playbook. TR will be paying lawyers for years.

@ohd: Are we to assume that once you become "old aged" (which is apparently 40's to you) that you will remove yourself from the workplace? Or you'll retire because you'll be in diapers and won't remember your name? I truly hope you aren't really this ignorant/stupid and are simply an a$$hole (you're probably both). Why else would someone go out of their way to post insulting messages on a layoff rumor board? Go play Fortnite or something, or wash your mom's car.

Early 40s are also in the pension plan.

Also, regardless whether one is working for TR or not, they still have to pay up once the time comes up.

Actually they are going after people in their mid 50s to mid 60’s particularly those who are grandfathered into the pension plan.

Hi - People are coming to this board because they are scared and suffering. A little more kindness would be helpful for everyone concerned.

Yes, the primary difference between the 20-something generation and older generations is that 20 somethings expect to be promoted to senior leadership roles with big pay increases after only three months and for doing what they are paid to do and no more. They are right in one sense though. There is no loyalty and it cuts both ways. Employees need to put themselves first

@mwr since you fall under the STEM exception I had mentioned, you simply fail at reading comprehension, or perhaps age related dementia. That too factors into layoff decisions.

Most of the workforce at TR aren’t 20 somethings so ofcourse the average laid off worker is going to be a lot older than say at a young tech company.

Anyways, the layoffs have a large distribution of age, gender, and ethnicity. That spreadsheet will be trotted if/when an employment discrimination lawyer sends a letter.

"older people these days are technologically illiterate"

Who do you think developed the technology that facilitates your every online activity? It wasn't Zuckerberg or his ilk, they just exploited something that already existed.

You're painting with a broad brush, and if you think "working a search engine" = tech literacy, then I don't know what to say to you.

It's not about tech literacy. It's political, and if you're paid well and don't have a Rabbi, it s---s to be you. The Rabbis all have well paid friends they're protecting.

lby - As an "older" engineer, I am betting I'm more proficient at operating a search engine than you. And speaking of efficiency, my experience with the younger generation is having to wake them up at their desks. That's productive, sure. And when they're awake, they're more interested in checking their Twitter feed than working. That is, if they even bother to show up at all. But thanks for the ignorance.

Yep, it's much better to keep younger workers who expect a trophy just for showing up rather than the employees who have already fought the wars for you.

@bxm in the past this was true. older people these days are technologically illiterate though, so it's much less true in than in the past. the ability to work a search engine is a productivity multiplier, and the over 40 crowd just s---s at it. The dirty little statistical data mining secret is that slashing your over 40 workforce to nothing is a massive efficiency booster. Exceptions can be made for your STEM folk who are more technologically savvy, but everyone else who wasn't around 18 or younger in 1997 is a c-apshoot of tech literacy.

Typically the way this is done is to discriminate by income, not age. It just so happens that people who make more income are older. It's like magic.

The goals is to reduce costs. Replace high paid with cheap labor.

Bad strategy for the long run, but if you are an executive with a golden parachute looking for short term success and higher stock prices...
